Giving Clear Instructions
Suggested Strategy: First, ask the employee to define what they believe
giving clear instructions means to ensure that you both are operating
under the same expectations. Use a risk question to help the employee
understand what potential issues they might be able to mitigate by giving
clear instructions.
Suggested Questions:
→ Define & Coach: When I say the phrase giving clear instructions, what
definition would you assign to it as it relates to giving instructions in your
position to others?
→ Risk Question: What risks do you think you might assume by not
adhering to the definition we just discussed?
→ Self-Actualized Question: What actions do you think you are willing to
take to ensure that you are practicing that definition each time you give
instructions to someone?
Suggested Activities:
→ Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down
how the employee currently approaches giving instructions to others.
On the right side of the board, write down the definition of giving clear
instructions that was discussed earlier and what that looks like for
this person in their line of work. Erase the left side of the board and
create a list of actions that they will take to practice that definition.
