Oversharing Becomes Distracting
Suggested Strategy: Focus the coaching conversation around the effect
that lack of focus on this employee’s own tasks can have on not only
them, but those around them that may be distracted. Strategize input so
that it is structured and time limited. Make sure that they know that their
contributions are valued, and you don’t want the enthusiasm to go away.
Suggested Questions:
→ Rating Question: On a scale of one to six, with 6 being 100% all of the
time, and 1 being you may find yourself more often focused on what
others are working on, where would you rank your focus on your own
tasks throughout the day?
→ Third-Party Question: If your best friend was here, how do you think
they would describe your ability to prioritize and get tasks completed?
→ Risk Question: What risks do you think you might assume by focusing
on other people’s work rather than your own?
Suggested Activities:
→ Brainstorming: Have the employee list out the top ten priorities that
they feel need to be addressed before anything else every day. Then,
ask them which four of those go at the top of the list, in order starting
with the most important, and why they chose that order. How do their
own projects and tasks rank on that list?
