Resolving Team Conflict Through Clarifying the Problem

Suggested Strategy: One thing that may be occurring with your team is a

lack of understanding of the problem. When that happens, conflict may

feed off itself. Get everyone on the same page by agreeing to create

systems that allow clarification of the problem.

Suggested Questions:

→ Third Party Question: If another team were to examine and rate our

team’s ability to deal with conflict by clarifying the root cause, what

would do you think their response would be? Why do you think they

would give that response?

→ Demo Me: Take a couple seconds to think on this, but then I’ll ask you

to demo me what our typical team response is when we hear a piece of

conflict/go through conflict. Use this question/activity to delve deeper

later in the activities section.

→ Risk Question: What risk do we as a team assume if we don’t engage

with conflict by clarifying the root problem or actual problem?

Suggested Activities:

→ Define & Coach: Use the Demo Me section as a guide to have the

team confront their current behaviors as it relates to confronting conflict.

Ask the team to define what it looks like to clarify the root cause of

conflict. Then fill in the gaps together and coach to that definition.
