→ Self-Directed Learning: Assign your coaching target to read a book on
empathy, such as Empathy: What It Is and How to Get It by Roman
Krznaric, one chapter per week. They should note five takeaways from
each chapter and how they can apply to their new strategy. They
should think about what they learn in each chapter and how it can be
beneficial to both the individual and the team.
→ Observational Coaching: Ask the individual to observe their peers as
they interact with their teams in sensitive situations. What strategies do
their peers have in place for tackling those situations with empathy?
What takeaways can they put into practice on their own as they
approach sensitive situations with members of their team?
Supplemental Coaching Strategies:
→ 30-Second Coaching: As the individual you are coaching exhibits
empathy in approaching sensitive situations, share with them the
specific actions taken that you have observed. You should also share
with them why their actions are appreciated by you and beneficial for
their team.
