Accepting Feedback Without Anxiety
Suggested Strategy: Open the conversation with asking for permission –
this helps the person you are coaching open themselves up to being
given feedback on their terms.
Suggested Questions:
→ Permission-Based Question + The Sword: With your permission, and
so that I don’t make any assumptions because that would be unfair to
you, I would like to share my perceptions with you as it relates to your
acceptance of feedback. (When permission is granted, share your
perceptions).
→ Reflective Question: I don’t want you to answer right away, I’m going
to (get a coffee, use the restroom, etc.) but while I’m gone, I’d like you to
think about what actions you might be willing to take in order to become
confident in accepting feedback from others.
Suggested Activities:
→ GOAL-Based Coaching: What does this person hope to become Great
at in their career? What Opportunities might present themselves as a
result of this person becoming great? What Actions must they take in
order to bring those opportunities within reach? What will they Love
about reaching their goals? What role might feedback play in the
employee’s path toward reaching their goals?
