Emphasizing Patience with Millennials
Suggested Strategy: It’s not necessarily their fault that millennials want
information right away, they grew up with search engines and the
internet. Teaching them that that same mindset doesn’t always translate
to a work environment is something that can be taught with perspective
taking and process outlining.
Suggested Questions:
→ Teach Me: What are some systems that stand in the way of obtaining
information right away at our company?
→ Self-Actualized Question: What communication barriers stand in the
way of getting the information you’re seeking right away?
→ Risk Question: What risks do you assume by not approaching
communication in a more patient, measured position here at this
company?
Suggested Activities:
→ Role Play: Suggest a scenario where an employee would want
information right away (i.e., information needed for a project/report, data
for a meeting, etc.) and the employee couldn’t obtain it. You would play
the role of the person the millennial would want information from. After
the scenario, discuss things that went well, and things that could
improve. In this conversation, be sure to outline specific steps that they
can take to improve.
