Entitled Employee
Suggested Strategy: Perception vs. Intent – Use Permission-Based
Questions along with The Sword to give feedback or observation to
avoid an accusatory conversation path.
Suggested Questions:
→ Permission-Based Question + The Sword: With your permission, just
so that I don’t make assumptions because that would be unfair to you,
I’d like to share some observations that I’ve made recently.
→ Self-Actualized Question: Knowing now the perception you may be
giving others, what specific actions do you think we should take together
to help your intentions match the positive perceptions you would like to
give others?
Suggested Activities:
→ Define & Coach: The employee might not be entirely sure of what
exactly their job requirements are. Ask them to explain what he/she
thinks their job entails and you can then compare exactly to what they
are expected to do by you and the company.
→ Brainstorming: Come up with an action plan of how to make sure that
the employee is addressing all the parts of their job description, not just
what he/she wants to do, which is what most people tend to gravitate
toward.
