Goal Setting with Millennials
Suggested Strategy: Millennials put a lot of emphasis on their jobs, so
much so that it becomes a major part of their lives and identity. Use this
as a drive to build realistic goals and build out a development plan to get
them there.
Suggested Questions:
→ Perception vs. Intent: I have noticed that you put a lot of emphasis
and enthusiasm into your job, am I correct in that assumption?
→ Self-Actualized Question: What are some high-level goals you have
for your career? What are your goals for the next year? Next month?
o This type of questioning helps align their high-level goals with
more tangible expectations, bringing them back down to reality
and the behaviors necessary for success in the moment.
→ Success Imperative: What can we do together to help you come up
with a plan to successfully meet those goals?
Suggested Activities:
→ Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of the board, list their current
behaviors and goals. Then, on the right, list out the goals and behaviors
they want to have in their career. Erase the left side and outline
specifically what behaviors, actions, and knowledge are necessary to
reaching those goals. This would be a perfect opportunity to examine
the practicality of their goals as well, and to offer suggestions.
