→ Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down the
stage that the person you are coaching is currently at in regard to their
career goals. On the right side of the board, write down their ultimate
career goal, as discussed in the GOAL-Based coaching activity. Draw a
horizontal arrow from the left statement toward the right statement with
five vertical hash marks along the arrow. At the top of the board, write
the word “Actions”. Work together to fill in the actions at each hash
mark that they will need to take to reach their ultimate career goal.
Suggested Learning Projects:
→ Tangible Successes: Assign your coaching target to come back to the
next coaching session with three examples of actions taken throughout
the week to become closer to reaching their goals and how those
actions will have an impact on the outcome of their career.
→ Journal-Based Coaching: Have the employee keep a journal in the
coming week. At the end of each day, ask them to write an entry
regarding where they feel they are in reaching their career goals. What
actions did they take that day to move forward in their career? Or do
they feel stuck that day?
Supplemental Coaching Strategies:
→ 30-Second Coaching: Take 30 seconds to verbally acknowledge
progress made by this person toward reaching their career goals. Take
this opportunity to remind the employee that they are moving toward the
specific career goal that they set for themselves.
