Lacking Awareness of Improvement Opportunities
Suggested Strategy: Using a Rule of Engagement, you set the tone for
the individual in your coaching session that they will not be allowed to
respond with “nothing” or “I can’t think of anything” related to their areas
that may need improvement. This will be a good starting point for the
individual to open themselves up to being coached.
Suggested Questions:
→ Rule of Engagement: Without saying “nothing” or that you “can’t think
of anything right now,'' I would like you to share with me one area of
your performance that you may have some room for improvement in.
→ Success Imperative: What actions might you be willing to take to
reach ultimate success by improving in this area?
Suggested Activities:
→ GOAL-Based Coaching: This is a great strategy to help the individual
find their emotional connections to their goals, and what truly motivates
them to reach success. What does the individual aspire to be Great at
in their position? What Opportunities might be afforded to the individual
by becoming great? What Actions must the individual take to bring
those opportunities within reach? What will the individual Love about
reaching their goals? (The last question should reveal the individual’s
true motivations).
