Progress in Current Position without Promotion
Suggested Strategy: Use a strategy called Coaching to the End - by
positioning the employee to explain their understanding of what he/she
wants to reach in their career and how they must get there, you open up
the conversation to the path they must take before reaching that goal.
Suggested Questions:
→ Define & Coach: Describe your understanding specifically of what
“insert desired job here” entails.
→ Self-Actualized Question: What are the actions that we need to take
together to help you reach that position some day?
o The objective is not to get into the perception of a fight or argument, but to help them reach their career goals.
Suggested Activities:
→ Whiteboard Coaching: Write out what are the top 5 things that the
employee understands that he/she needs to do specific to that job
promotion that they are seeking. This makes them validate their
understanding and their commitment to pursuing greatness in their
career and provides a visual representation of their goals.
