Suggested Learning Projects:
→ Journal-Based Coaching: Ask the person you are coaching to keep a
journal in the coming weeks with entries noting situations with clients
where they were able to use their interaction to build a positive
relationship, based on the definition discussed at the start of your
coaching session.
→ Peer-to-Peer Coaching: Assign your coaching target to meet with a
peer twice during the coming week to practice conversations with clients
that build positive relationships down the road. The individual you are
coaching should be prepared to play both roles in the conversation, both
the employee and the client. They should email you after the meeting,
copying the peer that they met with, to share anything they learned, any
takeaways from the conversation that they can put into practice in real
situations, and anything they felt that they could have improved in the
conversation.
Supplemental Coaching Strategies:
→ Observational Coaching: Assign your coaching target to observe their
peers throughout the week as they interact with clients. What strategies
do their peers have in place in their interactions? How closely do they
follow the definition of positive relationships with clients that you had
discussed at the beginning of your coaching conversation? What does
the individual see in terms of room for improvement, and how exactly
would they improve those parts of their peers’ interactions?
