Attention to Detail
Suggested Strategy: The focus of the conversation should be around
how adjusting their awareness of their actions can lead to success for
this individual.
Suggested Questions:
→ Permission-Based Question + The Sword: With your permission, and
so that I don’t make assumptions because that would be unfair to you, I
would like to share some observations with you that may provide an
opportunity for you to grow in your position. (When permission is
granted) It is my perception that you struggle with paying enough
attention to detail, and I share this with you because I want you to be
successful in your position, but I fear that this may be preventing you
from doing that.
→ Opposite Insertion Question: What will you do going forward to focus
on the details so that you may become as successful as possible in your
position?
Suggested Activities:
→ Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down
how this person thinks their peers would currently describe their
ability to give attention to the details. On the right side, write down
what paying attention to detail would ideally look like. Erase the left
side of the board and write down the actions that they are committed
to taking to reach the description on the left side of the board.
