Working Through Personal Issues
Suggested Strategy: Approach this
subject with sensitivity and ask for
permission. Use the five words
we, share, opportunity, perception,
observation to open the
conversation. Your focus should
be on protecting the employee
from exposing him/herself with
personal issues coming through to
the workplace.
Suggested Questions:
→ Permission-Based Question + The Sword: “With your permission,
and so that I don’t make any assumptions regarding your intentions
because that would be unfair to you, I would like to share some
observations with you, as well as some opportunity for potential
growth. “When permission is granted, follow up with, “it is my
perception that….”
→ Risk Question: What risks do you think might present themselves
when your peers perceive that you can be negative at work?
→ Reflective Coaching: Allow for this person to take some time (a day or
so) to think about the answer to the question, “what actions do you think
you might need to take to ensure that your peers have the perception
that you maintain a positive attitude?”
