Improving a Toxic Team Environment
Suggested Strategy: In coaching the team leader that is charged with
improving the team environment, utilize a Third-Party Question to bring
awareness to how others may perceive the team environment.
Suggested Questions:
→ Third-Party Question: If we were to ask someone from outside of the
company how they would describe your team environment after
observing them for a day, what do you think they might say and why?
→ Self-Actualized Question: What do you think you must specifically do
as a leader for this team to make a change so that the perception of
others regarding your team is a more positive one?
Suggested Activities:
→ Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down
how the team currently interacts with each other, and the potential
risks involved with their behavior. On the right side of the board, ask
the individual how they would describe what an ideal environment
might look like for their team and how that would mitigate some of the
risks onthe left side of the board. Then, erase the left side of the
board and work together with the individual to create a list of actions to
be taken to improve the team’s environment and reach the description
on the right side of the board.
