JULY 2024
Growing Together With You
‘Honey, You Bought a Limo!’ Carmen Lands in the Doghouse — Again
We all love celebrating the Fourth of July at this time of year. But I want to recognize another holiday that ranks right up there on most guys’ lists: National Get Out of the Doghouse Day. This holiday rolls around only once a year, on July 17, but it should be celebrated at least once a month at my house. By the 17th of any month, I have usually done something that requires me to ask forgiveness. Luckily, I have a wife who is very forgiving. Before I married Marjorie 26 years ago, I warned her that I do make mistakes once in a while. She was thinking once a decade. I was thinking once a week. We never got together on that number. Remembering anniversaries, birthdays, or any special day — you name it, I’ve screwed it up. If I have a hunch that an anniversary is near, I go into a panic and say, “Honey, are we exchanging gifts this year for our anniversary?” And she will say, “Don’t worry about it. I already got myself something very nice.” At that point, I really can’t ask any questions, so I just say, “Great, that’s wonderful!” It’s not only dates that I forget. There was the time when my wife called and asked me to pick up our son Nick at school for a doctor appointment. The young lady in the office greeted me and handed me a form to fill out. The form asked for Nick’s grade, and I put “4 or 5.” She looked at the form and said, “You put 4 or 5. Do you know which grade he is in?
“No, I don’t,” I said.
“Do you know who your child’s homeroom teacher is?” she asked.
“No, I don’t remember. He’s my fourth child. Don’t you have a computer that will help you figure that out?” I said. So of course, that has been a running joke in the family for years. I am usually getting into trouble for the right reasons. When I am thinking about a client’s case, I get in the zone. If I am late for a dinner date or I forgot an important birthday, it was because I was trying to help out a client or working late on a case. If I find myself in the doghouse, it’s not for bad things, but for dumb things. I have never forgotten to pick up the kids, but I have taken detours when I was thinking about work and I was supposed to go right and I went left. My wife would catch me on my cellphone. “Hey, are you picking up the kids?” And I’d say, “Yes.” And she would ask, “Where are you?” Oops! “I am going to pick up the kids right now.” And I would turn around and drive back to the school. The kids were fine with it. Their reaction was, “OK, cool, Dad’s here.” Other times, it was vehicle purchases that landed me in the doghouse. I once went to an auction to buy a golf cart and bought a limousine instead. Almost immediately after I paid for the limo, my wife called and said, “I just got a notification regarding my AmEx card. What did you buy?”
Happy with our service? We’d love to hear from you! We are always honored when our clients and associates refer their friends, family, and colleagues our way — or simply say kind things about our firm. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know. We’re here to help!
“Honey, you bought a limo!” I said.
“What?” she said. We had the limo for a couple of years before I got rid of it. To her, it was an eyesore. Then there was the time I bought my wife a double-decker bus. Our neighbor told us about it — a 1957 Leyland Motors classic straight

We the People …
THE IMPORTANCE OF AGREEING TO DISAGREE
Once upon a time, in a land far away, a country was founded by a bunch of humble people looking for a better life. These ordinary people grew tired of a distant king’s rules and taxes and decided to take a bold stand. You may remember them, they threw tea into the harbor, signaling their frustration and desire for independence. They had a revolutionary idea: That regular people could think for themselves and govern their own lives. They called it Democracy, and it meant, “Rule by the People.” They believed that when ordinary folks talk, they generate remarkable ideas and can be their own leaders. These ordinary people talked and talked. Even after a long day of work, they never stopped talking. With the advent of printing presses, their words reached even more people and new ideas were created and talked about. Ideas flowed freely and began to spread from countless minds, not just the king’s. Of course, the king tried to silence them.
But, the spread of ideas was like a wildfire, and they could not be contained. The king sent troops in bright red coats. However, the determined little nation stood its ground, and the king’s efforts ultimately failed. These citizens often disagreed, sometimes heatedly, but they found a way to compromise. They wrote down their agreements on paper, beginning with “We the People,” ensuring that everyone could keep talking and even disagreeing. Word of this revolutionary idea spread, attracting people from all over the world. Many of these newcomers were tired, poor, and hungry, but they were welcomed to the table. A statue was erected to greet them, inviting them to “breathe free.” Of course, the journey wasn’t always smooth. At one point, their disagreements led to a bloody civil war. But in the aftermath, they mended their wounds and continued talking.
Over time, life became easier with modern conveniences like refrigerators, air conditioners, and televisions. Gradually, they talked less to each other and more to the people on the screens. Then, one day in September, tragedy struck, and for a brief moment, they remembered the power of coming together despite their differences. But soon, they returned to their comfortable lives and the voices they agreed with, forgetting the profound idea that had once united them: the agreement to disagree. This foundational principle was what made their country special. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us remember the importance of conversation and community. By embracing our differences and continuing to talk, we can honor the legacy of those early Americans who dared to dream of a nation built on the power of ideas, talking, and disagreeing. Happy Fourth of July.

from London. I went to look at it, and when I came home, my wife said, “You didn’t buy that thing, did you?”
“No, Honey, I didn’t buy it. You did! It’s in your name!”
“What?” she said. “You need to get rid of that thing fast!”
As it turned out, I had the double-decker bus for 15 years. I had it completely rebuilt, and it was a source of great joy for me and a symbol of our firm at community events. It was registered in my wife’s name the whole time. After that, I had to promise her there would be no more vehicle surprises. “I don’t want to be surprised with anything!” Marjorie told me. “From now on, we talk about your purchases in advance!” If I land in the doghouse, I always apologize and say, “It’s never going to happen again.” And my wife knows, deep down, that it’s probably going to happen again. But she accepts me with all my faults. I am just waiting for the one time my wife makes a mistake that lands her in the doghouse. After 26 years of marriage, I am still waiting.

The biggest part of any collision case is knowing who was at fault — who caused the collision.
In a recent biker case, where our client passed away from the injuries, the insurance company

for the at-fault driver tried to convince us that our biker client was at fault because that is what the driver told them.
Our biker was not at fault. He was an experienced driver, and we were ready to pull out all the stops to prove that he did nothing wrong.
A referral is the greatest gift we can receive from a client or fellow business! Last month we had ... • 42 referrals from friends, family, or previous clients • 21 returning clients for new matters • 20 referrals from other attorneys • 6 referrals from doctors and other professionals • We also send out referrals to our trusted referral partners! A Huge Thank-You to Our Referral Partners!
Evidence can come from anywhere, and it’s up to you to find it right away. When we are hired, we scour the internet, pictures, cell phone video, and, yes, even social media — whatever evidence we can find — so that we can determine exactly who was the at-fault party. Who was at fault becomes important when you are calculating your client’s damages. If you were 10% at fault, you will only be able to recover 90% of your damages in Florida. In this recent motorcycle case, because we were retained quickly, we were able to uncover video from a nearby hotel, which clearly placed the other driver at fault. The insurance company wanted to pay nothing to the family of this deceased biker. We settled the case for $1.5 million after we showed them the video of the accident.
What’s the Good News ?
Your DLG personal injury team is ready, willing, and able to do the same for you.

1 Carmen Celebrates National Get Out of the Doghouse Day 2 The Power of Continuing the Conversation Our Clients Say It Best 3 Gathering Evidence Crucial in This Case Follow Us on Social Media! 4 Paris Summer Olympics Will Showcase French Flair
GAME CHANGING
Paris 2024: Not Your Grandfather’s Olympics From the country that gave us Napoleon, escargot, and high-fashion runways, this news should come as no surprise: The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will break the mold.
Open-water swimming events will also be held in the Seine — a plan that alarmed fans who recall that the river flooded with untreated sewage as recently as last year after heavy rains overwhelmed the city’s old sewers. French officials say the city has dug a giant reservoir nearby to collect excess rainwater and prevent a recurrence. The Eiffel Tower will be a looming presence over a temporary arena built for beach volleyball and other events. The layout ensures that the nearly 1 billion expected TV viewers will get an eyeful of the iconic 135-year-old iron spire. The Eiffel Tower plays another pivotal role. Iron taken from its girders during renovations in the past century has been forged into the center of each Olympic medal in the shape of a hexagon (mimicking the rough outline of France on a map). While most Olympic mascots have been cuddly animal figures, France’s quirky mascots, the Phryges (pronounced fri-jee-uhs), are red, white, and blue cartoon characters modeled after a conical hat worn as a symbol of liberty during the French Revolution. It’s a brief reminder, lest viewers forget, that among all of its other distinctions, France is also one of the birthplaces of modern democracy.
Organizers have missed no opportunity to put a distinctly French stamp on this international event, as TikTok personality one37pm pointed out in a video. Venues, ceremonies, medals, and mascots are all intended to highlight France’s unique architecture and history. The setting for the opening ceremonies will be the picturesque heart of Paris. The parade of athletes will be held on the River Seine, with each national delegation riding in boats fitted with cameras to project the athletes’ images on public screens. It may be hard for Paris to out-do opening ceremonies of the past, such as the four-hour extravaganza at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing or London’s 2012 Olympic opener featuring a Queen Elizabeth body double parachuting into Olympic Stadium from a helicopter. Nevertheless, in a significant first, admission for the hundreds of thousands of expected spectators will be free, a gesture also likely to be remembered.
