Obviously I knew what racism was because I’d experienced it. I experienced the violence of racism growing up. I’d experienced it throughout school, the name calling, all that was all a part of me. And I just found these people didn’t have that kind of poison. They more or less, had more of an enlightened position. So to be honest, I was learning from them … it was like a University, but with less rules and more art … what I did learn was the energy to stand up resist stereotypical ideas and easy opinions. So I think that’s what was moulding me. Aki Nawaz Yeah, I first went down to the 1 in 12, I think I was 14, and I went with my mum because we were trying to have a gig. I just remember people being like, amazing that just like, a bunch of 14/15 year olds didn’t know what they were doing at all, putting on a gig, and them just being like, “yeah, come and do it. We’ll show you how”. Joel White I’ve always felt politically like, I don’t have the theory behind me, right? I don’t. Haven’t done all the readings ... I’ve never been a massive activist, as in I will go to protest, but I won’t necessarily be the person who’s coming up with the more edgy kind of ways, and it’s okay. I don’t have to be, you know. There’s space for us to be activists in gentler ways and in more local ways. So I think that’s quite nice … I like that accessibility. Anika Easy I mean, personally for me, starting the studio, that became a really important part for me. I mean, I was doing live sound as well, but actually turning a kind of disused space into something that could be used as a recording studio, that was kind of, that was really important to me. Bri Doom Because of seeing Noel’s play - one of Noel’s plays about the end of the world I think. I remember thinking, “Oh, I think I could do that.” And so with the 1 in 12 Drama Collective, I wrote my first play. I wrote a thing called Bradford Bad Lad. Alice Nutter I mean, I am a librarian by day, so I kind of was interested in the slightly boring book related stuff. But actually, being encouraged to just do DIY at a level that I wouldn’t have just taken on at home, you know, was really amazing and I learned so much from other people around me. Ellie Clements
