we should treat each other, and that that is the club, no matter what, what’s going on above it, no matter what events are going on. The underpinning value of the club is that belief system, and that should be there all the time. Emma Marshall The generational thing is coming through now. My kids have grown through the club, other people’s kids have grown and got involved and a new generation of kids are coming through now. Gary Cavanagh I just have to believe, and maybe it’s naive, but I have to believe that young people will always find a way to find their people and to find their alternative, whether they’re doing it now on online communities or whether they are gathering in physical spaces. Steve Von Till It’s survived for so long and somehow proved that young people can collectively run something successful and not in terms of profit, but like sustainability, and take ownership on something. It deserves a lot of credit for that, and I don’t think it gets it. Jonathan Lorrimer The young ones that are coming through now, the scene’s very different because their parents are very different … I think about Haider a lot, you know, he comes from a Pakistani Muslim com- munity. He goes to places where there’s alcohol, but, you know, he’s never tempted. And I think because he’s switched on, because his parents have probably been switched on as well. And I think the reason why, like, you know, the early days of 1 in 12 was so white was just because, you know, people of colour just didn’t go out in the same way, and they didn’t access things in the same way. Whereas I think the digital movement, social media, has had a massive impact that you can actually see it’s a safe space, you know, it’s just like, “Oh, my friends have been at this at 1 in 12. Oh, wow. Look at like, the rainbow nation of people that have been attending this now”. And so therefore, it opens up people’s minds in a different kind of way. Dipak Mistry I think it’s legacy will be different to each person that’s ever been a part of it, because that’s what you’ll take away from it … I was very adamant we should never leave Albion Street. As I got older, I realised it’s just a building, and the club’s moved several times, and maybe it can move again ... But like, it’s like a home for me, it will always be home. Sean Barrett
I think it’s been conscious effort of the people who are currently involved in regards to the fact that we are gonna hopefully have access to grant money and make the place physically more accessible. I think we, as a collective, are trying to aim towards a space that isn’t just for older generation books or anyone else singular. I think we are trying to make it a bit more of a social centre. Erik Rattus We were talking about, what is the future of 1 in 12 club on Albion street. You know, we’ve always said 1 in 12 club is more than just a building … So we were thinking, Is it time to downsize? Do we need a building? Do we? Do we keep the building? ... A couple of members put in a funding bid, and we got awarded some money to do some accessibility works. And when we got back news, it was like, Okay, we’ve got a really good shot here, maybe even, you know, the last really good shot. To improve a building and reset the foundations and make this building sound for perhaps another 40 years of music and mayhem on Albion Street … if we’re successful, when we’re successful, I think we’re really going to have a happy, vibrant, healthy 1 in 12 club to say to people, come and join us. Get involved with mutual aid. Get involved in solidarity. Get involved in some music, some mayhem. So I think, you know, we really have an opportunity to, like, continue the legacy of 1 in 12 club. Carl White The 1 in 12 club couldn’t have been anywhere else, because people that started it were born and brought up in Bradford. And it came out of the Claimant’s Union, their branch was in Bradford… You just start with who you are, where you’re at, and the people you’re with. That’s it. Chris (Peasant Collective)
