Connecting the Diaspora, One Gathering at a Time IJUS Travel traveled to Rio for the @blacktravelsummit to connect with cultural ambassadors and bring heritage-rich insights back to our clients. Arrival + Opening Moments I touched down and checked into my oceanfront room at the @GrandHyatt_Rio . A quick visit to Christ the Redeemer offered the clearest views I’ve ever seen and grounded the start of this intentional journey. The Summit’s opening reception was alive with samba & vibrant conversation with exhibitors from Tanzania, Benin, & Barbados. @amawaterways shared how river cruising is evolving to uplift heritage storytelling. The energy was welcoming, expansive, and deeply rooted in connection. Cultural Immersion in Motion Afro-Brazilian samba class led by @mayombemasai , taught not only movement but meaning — connecting rhythm with lineage. Dance as resistance, joy, and remembrance. @etniasturismoecultura toured us through Pedra do Sal, the birthplace of Samba, as we enjoyed cachaça tasting, and a music-filled stroll through Lapa keeping the night flowing with a vibrancy Rio is known for. Designing for the Diaspora Heritage-centered itinerary design, ethical storytelling, and culinary narratives across the Diaspora were explored in a powerful sessions such as the one led by @blackfoodfridays - reinforcing how food, memory, and migration shape the way we experience a place.

EDITOR & FOUNDER’S NOTE

@the.bhia —highlighted pathways into property development, real estate, and community-driven lodging, while @meryanneinspired explored Afro-diasporic design principles, reminding us that culturally rooted luxury doesn’t need to follow Western hospitality models. A Moment of Creative Expression Participating in the Mount Cinnamon Dream Room Design Challenge hosted by @mountcinnamongrenada , where we pitched culturally inspired hotel room concepts was a beautiful moment to merge storytelling, aesthetics, and cultural memory into a vision for hospitality rooted in belonging. We each interpreted Diaspora identity through color palettes, textures, and sensory details. The Gala: A Celebration of Black Imagination The weekend culminated in an evening honoring creatives, advisors, filmmakers, cultural leaders, and emerging voices who continue to uplift Diaspora narratives across the globe with artistry and intention. Looking Ahead @visitrio and @visitbrasil embraced us with rhythm, warmth, and cultural depth, reminding us why IJUS Travel is committed to designing journeys that highlight

art, music, food, dance, and wellness. As we look toward

@visitmilwaukee in 2026, we carry with us the energy, insight, and relationships formed at BTS. Obrigado, Rio!.

With my birthday twin & one of the BTS organizers, presenting at the Design a Room challenge

CARNIVAL

THE SEASON OF FEATHERS, FLAGS & FULL-BODY JOY

After a fast-paced weekend in the Carnival capital of Rio, it only makes sense that this issue highlights the cultural celebration that moves across the entire diaspora: Carnival—or Carnaval, depending on where you land. From the Caribbean islands to the continent of Africa, to South America, Carnival is music, movement, memory, and a global expression of joy. I’ve had the pleasure (and the cardio test!) of experiencing several: Caribana in Toronto, Carnival in Trinidad, Carnaval in Mindelo, Cabo Verde, a few in the US and Junkanoo in The Bahamas. Anywhere we are, a celebration ensues. Including in the US and UK. Each one carries its own flavor, its own heartbeat, and its own way of reminding you that culture is alive and always calling. In this issue, we’re focusing on the carnivals that happen December through June—the ones that kick off the year with feathers, flags, rhythm, and revelry. No matter which you choose, you can count on fêtes, music, dancing, community, and full-body celebration. My Carnival journey started later in life, and let me tell you: it is the most exhausting fun you will ever have. A few of my hard-earned tips? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Get your cardio up at least 90 days before. Register early with your band. Lock in your crew—because this is a marathon of fêtes, not a sprint. And come prepared: tights, pee funnels, fans, fanny packs, liquid I.V., mini liquor bottles, snacks, face gems… trust me, you’ll thank yourself. Carnival has a way of creating connections instantly—because even when a language barrier exists, the person liming, whining, or samba’ing next to you might just become your lifeline. Choose your company wisely. And choose a travel team that understands the logistics, timing, moving parts, and necessary R & R afterward (because you will need it). At IJUS Travel, our partners know Carnival inside and out—so your only job is to show up, shine, and let the music take you.

CARNIVAL

Carnival is a masterclass in creativity and cultural preservation. As the season moves from winter into spring, celebrations shift in tone and tradition: some begin with sunrise rituals and powder, others with drums echoing through historic town squares; some rely on theatrical symbolism, others on glitter and feathers; some challenge you to keep pace, others invite you to slow down and witness. In the Caribbean and Atlantic region, Carnival often blends African retentions with island-specific rhythms—bouyon, calypso, soca, gwo-ka, jab, zouk—shaping road experiences that feel both familiar and new. Some islands root their storytelling in folklore and ancestral characters; others prioritize pageantry, costumes, or sonic innovation. Rooted in the sounds of the diaspora, Carni‌val is a return to our common language - JOY!‌ MIKA SMITH DIFFERENT EXPRESSIONS OF THE SAME ANCESTRAL SONG. Across Africa, South America, and the The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), Carnival often expands into large-scale choreography, samba schools, trios elétricos, and processions grounded in Afro-Brazilian, Cape Verdean, or creole memory. These Carnivals stretch the imagination—bold, colorful, spiritual, and fiercely expressive. In places like Brooklyn, Miami Toronto and Notting Hill, Carnival takes on a different shape—blending cultural fragments, migration stories, and community traditions into celebrations that belong equally to the past and the present. Despite the differences, the throughline is unmistakable: joy as resistance, community as celebration, and rhythm as inheritance.
