REBUILDING YESTERDAY & TOMORROW; TODAY.
OUR MISSION:
Our 501(c)(3) was birthed April 25th, 1978 by professors of San Diego State as Ecological Life Systems Institute.(E.L.S.I.). Their futuristic view of the challenges that the environment would eventually face served as the seed that metamorphosed into Rebuilding Green. Today, RBG. has enhanced its mission to include affordable housing solutions. It strives to lead our communities to a new way of living, which was a part of the original plan fueled by our Creator, who gifted us with tools to live healthy, self-sustaining, and happy lives. We believe that the BIG problems that our nation faces have natural and tiny solutions that will bring 'community' back into our neighborhoods. The last 30 years of wrong-minded policies have gotten us into this housing crisis, and I think its innovation that’s going to get us back out of it. We can’t subsidize our way out of this. 2 Restoring, rebuilding communities and saving dreams amongst youth, seniors, working families, and veterans through affordable housing solutions while being socially and environmentally responsible
~ San Diego Commissioner Doug Austin

Re-imagine living Tiny
A paradigm has been gaining momentum over the last decade. People everywhere are realizing that the concept that ‘BIGGER-is-Better’ is a mirage that only enslaved us to our houses & destroyed the sense of community that we once knew. Houses grew while the family unit shrank, compromising our most valuable relationships. The average number of square feet per person in the median new home nearly doubled from 1970 to 2010. Furthermore, one-person households have grown dramatically to 28.37%, up from 17% in 1970.
1970
2020
'Bigger-is-Better’ has produced a steep social decline While income & life expectancy has increased, deterioration of relationships has risen. 1-in-3 people over 65 live alone & half of those over 85 live alone, which contribute to health issues. Millennials are now the largest population who have the lowest rate of marriage while the boomers have picked up a new term, ‘gray divorce’ with the highest rate of divorce. RBG recognizes the impact that Tiny-Homes in backyards and Tiny-Villages can haves by reducing isolation, increasing independence and enhancing purpose of life. With this, RBG will continue to advocate for the solutions that Tiny-Homes offer.

ReBuilding Green (RBG) is excited to participate alongside like-minded entities and individuals who are passionate about delivering results in an increasingly unaffordable housing market for those experiencing housing insecurity. A safe place to call home is the basis for all successful outcomes in life –social, medical, educational, vocational. Housing must be one of the state's top priorities to act now. RBG believes that through a collaborative effort and through innovative housing, the answers to affordability is available today. Whether it is repurposing land that already exists, such as back yards, church parking lots, run-down trailer parks, or school campuses, PreFAB / Movable Tiny Homes can provide the housing that California is in dire need of throughout the state. RBG brings its experienced all-star team to implement services addressing California's dire need for affordable housing solutions with the following focus and described briefly in the pages to follow: Repurposing existing land usages

’YES’ in my back yard Some residents that might have once opposed new construction in their neighborhoods have metamorphosed from the mindset of a NIMBY, named for the phrase, "Not In My Backyard," to the opposite view called YIMBY, "Yes In My Backyard" and even pushing governments to allow them to build more and more housing in their backyards, literally with Accessory Dwelling Units. (ADU’s) A previous adversarial discussion between homeowners and local building departments has been relaxed by updated regulations on 2 nd units as the housing crisis escalates. ACU’s are now mutually welcomed by the State of California and its homeowners as the quickest, most economical way to answer the states housing crisis, increase monthly cash flow, and provide an affordable housing solution to those who face housing insecurity. Create ‘Smart-backyards’ for youth, seniors, veterans, and single parents who need housing now.

RE-THINK AFFORDABLE ZONING TINY HOME ZONES
Most municipalities have zoning, land use and development codes to guide development of typical single-family home and multifamily product. But, a tiny home development, does not neatly fit into either of these categories. A municipality could design a zoning district or overlay district know as “Tiny Home Zones.” A tiny home zone or village (THZ) could consist of typical tiny homes on foundations and movable tiny homes (MTH). Following are several ideas for potential development of such THZ.
* The images below are of a Southern California trailer park with plans to rebuild a Tiny Home Village that is purposively designed to increase a sense of ‘community.’ Currently, these types of pocket neighborhoods can only exist on land zoned for RV Parks.
• RV/ Apartment Look-alike Zoning • One-owner Project • Multiple Property Owner Subdivision

The housing issues cannot be solved with any one individual, county or city jurisdiction, or entity. A collaborative effort must come together to take on this call to deliver housing to make a difference truly. The following components are necessary to realize successful outcomes for a happier world:
INDIVIDUAL COMMITMENT TO A GROUP EFFORT—THAT IS WHAT MAKES A TEAMWORK, A COMPANY WORK, A SOCIETY WORK, A CIVIILIZATION WORK.
