THE PERFECT GIFT
H ave you heard about the little boy who wrote a letter to Santa Claus this season? As no address was given, it landed in the Dead Letter Office in Washington D.C. The postmaster was so touched by the boy’s earnest plea, asking for a hundred dollars, that he sent the note along to the White House. As the President read it, he too, was moved. Naturally, he didn’t want to see the lad disappointed so he took a five-dollar bill out of his pocket and gave instructions that it should be sent along to the boy. When the child got the letter, he was delighted. Immediately he sat down and wrote another note which also landed in the capital. It read, “Dear Santa: Thank you so much for answering my request. It was wonderful. If you don’t mind, however, next time don’t send it through Washington; they take so much out for taxes!” There was more truth to that than the lad realized. What odd gifts are available this year! One of our department stores had a counter item which was adver tised, “For the man who has every thing.” It was a gunny sack in which to put “everything.” Quite a useless g ift! When our children were smaller, I remember the first Christ mas present our Peggy, who will soon be 17, gave me. She not only wrapped it herself; she made it her self. I’m still not sure what it was; however, I have an idea the strange ly shaped “glob” is something from outer space or simply a good-sized paper weight. Regardless, it’s a priceless treasure. The Bible tells us about the most wonderful gift in all the world which God has provided in the person of His Son, the Lord Je sus Christ. This present far tran
scends anything which can be pro vided or purchased here on earth. James 1:17 tells us, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh from the Father of lights, with whom is no variable ness, neither shadow of turning.” Contrast the good and perfect gift of God with the reward of sin in the human life. The Lord didn’t wait until we did something to deserve His gift. If we had to prolong our receiving Him until we achieved something that was meritorius in His sight, we would still be hope lessly lost. While we were yet sinners (aliens and enemies of God), Christ died for us. History tells of the death of a king who ruled his land in honesty. He had twin sons who were both heirs to the throne. Since no one could remember who was born first, it fell the lot of the Prime Minister to determine which one would be
