work, he took the axe, saying, Here, let me do that for you. You shouldn’t have to do this kind of work.” When the job was all completed, the dis heveled man thanked the young fel low profusely. Reaching in his pock et, he pulled out his calling card and said, “If you’ll bring this to my office tomorrow at 4 o’clock, I’ll see that you have a job. You see, as my card states, I’m the mayor of the city.” The young man laughed, thinking that the old fellow was imagining things. However, he humored him. All that night, the more he thought about the stranger he had assisted, the more he felt he should at least stop by the mayor’s office. When he made his appearance at 4 o’clock next day, the mayor, now clean and shav en, introduced himself again. As promised, a job was waiting. Once the Boston newspapers got wind of the story, it was front page copy. To think the mayor would be willing to live as the poorest man in the city! The banner headline was. “GREATEST SOCIAL STOOP IN HISTORY.” The mayor’s condescen- continued from page 2 OTHER STATES _____ Albuquerque, New Mexico KA R A 1310 8:00 A.M. selected. One day he observed the twins while they were asleep in their cribs. One had his fist tightly clenched while the other’s was open and free. The choice was made. The one whose hand was open became the monarch. Through the years of his reign he was known as “the king with the open hand.” This is a home ly illustration of our Lord whose hands are always open to bestow good gifts upon His children. Apart from Him, we are helpless and hope less. When the Lord gives, it is not to curry favor. He has no ulterior mo tives, as do the businessmen of our day in their favors. He simply wants our love. The human mind cannot fathom the depths of Christ’s love in what He did to make our salva tion possible. He made Himself of no reputation. He was willing to bear the brunt of evil and malicious sto ries about Himself that we might know the joy and peace of sins for given. He humbled Himself and be came obedient unto death, even the humiliating, agonizing death of the cross. Some years ago in Boston, during the depression, as everywhere, people were hard pressed to find any food. Jobs were scarce; money was almost an unknown commodity. The mayor of the city decided that, in order to know exactly what his people were going through, he himself would live like one of them. For several days he let his beard grow. Then, putting on old and dirty clothes, he went down to some of the districts where people were hit the hardest. Things were extremely difficult. At a hotel, he received meager food and temporary lodging in exchange for doing some manual labor. For his evening meal he had to chop wood for the heater. Because of his age and his not being accustomed to that type of work, he nearly expired. A young man who happened on the scene immediately sensed the situa tion. Although he too was out of 24
