From Clinical to Comforting

Bessemer’s original UAB Medical West Hospital was built during a time when healthcare priorities and design philosophies centered on efficiency and standardization. Interiors were often clinical, and aesthetics were predominantly utilitarian finishes that set a cold, orderly tone. Sixty years later, that’s all changed. Today, the most dramatic difference between past and present is what visitors experience as soon as they walk through the doors. The hospital’s soaring main lobby immediately sets the tone, immersing them in expansive glass walls that flood the space with daylight and frame views of trees, sky, and water. International design firm HKS, Inc. and Birmingham-based KPS Group, a 60-year old firm rooted in architecture, interior design and urban planning, created this dramatic effect using native Alabama plant species as their guide. The team took a biophilic approach, producing a floor-by-floor gallery of nine regional flower and tree species, each distinguished by detailed photos and thoughtful textiles and wallcoverings that immerse visitors in a nature-inspired design story.

As healthcare systems across the U.S. address aging facilities, new construction is ushering in the next generation of architectural designs and interiors focused on improving the patient experience to promote health and well- being. University of Alabama Birmingham’s Medical West in McCalle, AL, is a prime example of this experiential upgrade. Replacing a 1960s-era hospital in Jefferson County, the new ultra-modern healthcare center features a hospital with the latest in medical technology and equipment and a unique design that prioritizes patient comfort.

Integrating the health campus’s outdoor landscape with its interior design, the new hospital and adjoining medical office building stand in striking contrast to their predecessor, creating a restorative space grounded in regional plant life and Southern hospitality. With high- performance finishes that include Momentum’s P3TEC Advanced Wall Protection, the new health center’s interiors deliver the durability healthcare requires using colors and textures that support a healing environment.

A Botanical Blueprint

Jessica Babler, KPS Group senior associate and design team member, agrees. “P3TEC was the perfect solution for UAB Medical West because it met the hospital’s requirements for robust performance in a high-traffic space while bringing in the softer visual elements needed in a healing environment,” she says. “The multitude of colors and dimensional textures offered in the collection were an ideal choice for our concept.” The design team echoed many of the hospital’s floral-inspired graphics with P3TEC’s Coastal Grass series in colors such as Spearmint, Lilac Breeze, and Peridot, creating interiors that are informative and restorative as well as protective. “Instead of relying on the default combination of wall panels on the lower half of the wall and paint on the upper half, we opted for a wall protection that looks more like a design element than a protective layer,” says McClenny. “We chose P3TEC’s Coastal Grass series for its natural, dynamic, grass-like appearance, and we applied it from floor-to-ceiling to create that hospitality look and feel. It really packs a punch without compromising protection.” It really packs a punch without compromising protection.”

“The hospital’s biophilic theme applies logical patterns of botanical images and colors to make wayfinding easy for patients,” explains Leslie McClenny, KPS Group senior associate. “We completed the theme with wallcoverings like P3TEC and upholstery fabrics in complementary shades and textures, so that every element plays a part in making the space comfortable as well as durable.” Momentum’s P3TEC Advanced Wall Protection, produced in 15-yard rolls, offers embossed organic textures and colors plus the high-level performance that is essential for healthcare. Unlike traditional rigid wall panels that provide hospital-level protection but lack aesthetic appeal, P3TEC merges heavy- duty performance with versatile style.

Inside exam rooms, P3TEC appears on the headwalls behind patient beds, bringing in a subtle, organic look that softens the surrounding equipment and creates a calmer backdrop for care. The soothing wall protection tones and warm flooring and cabinetry counterbalance the sterility often associated with medical spaces. Outside the rooms, the same P3TEC wall protection provides a continuous, seamless appearance, visually linking patient rooms with public areas and reinforcing the nature-inspired narrative.

Demonstrating this ideal balance, P3TEC is featured throughout the UAB Medical West hospital in patient rooms, recovery bays, exam rooms, and corridors, where durability and design are equal priorities. As physicians and staff maneuver carts, beds, and wheelchairs in these areas, P3TEC withstands repeated incidents of impact and abrasion while maintaining its surface integrity. Beyond aesthetics, the wall protection’s chemical resistance ensures it will maintain its refined appearance even with the frequent cleaning and disinfecting required in hospitals.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

McClenny agrees, noting that the new hospital exemplifies modern healthcare design and captures a welcome change in the patient experience.

“Patients immediately notice the difference when they walk into the new hospital,” says Keith Pennington, UAB Medical West CEO. “The warm colors and high-quality finishes create an atmosphere that feels welcoming, and our staff appreciates having spaces that are functional as well as attractive. The sense of calm created by our new facility is invaluable when people are facing health challenges, and it has transformed how patients and families experience their time here.”

Healthcare centers like UAB Medical West present a special set of requirements for wall protection. Not only must the material withstand heavy daily use, but it also must contribute to making spaces feel relaxed and restorative. P3TEC Advanced Wall Protection bridges these needs by combining Division 10, rigid sheet performance with the warmth and design flexibility of a wallcovering. P3TEC comes on a roll and installs like a Type II, Division 09 product, but it delivers the durability of a wall protection system with features that include: • Impact resistance : P3TEC is engineered to endure carts, beds, wheelchairs, and constant corridor traffic. • Chemical resistance : Withstands harsh disinfectants and repeated cleanings without damage. • Abrasion resistance: Prevents scuffs and scratches from equipment and everyday contact. • Design options: Offered in a wide array of patterns and colors that mimic fabrics, stone, and natural textures. • Easy installation: Comes on a roll and installs like a wallcovering, providing seamless coverage. For installers, the rolled material calls on familiar overlap and cutting methods but with some

“UAB Medical West has always been home to incredible care and physicians,” says McClenny. “Now, the physical space reflects that high level of care, giving the community convenient access to state-of- the-art health services in a thoughtful, patient-centered environment. It’s a hospital that heals in every sense of the word.”

minor adjustments to allotted installation time and cutting pressure. Momentum also provides both group and on-site training sessions to help contractors and crews get familiar with P3TEC and build confidence before tackling large projects. By merging hospital-grade performance with hospitality-inspired aesthetics, P3TEC enables designers to create spaces that feel warm and welcoming while enduring the daily demands of healthcare.
