Fierce Protectors of the Injured
ENSURE YOUR FUTURE IS ALWAYS PROTECTED A PSA for Drivers and Riders Returning to the Road
Once, I had a client who was killed on his motorcycle. His wife called me. He decided to just take a quick ride. He wasn’t wearing a helmet, and he didn’t have any life insurance. Although he had liability coverage, it was the state minimum. He had five kids. This is a common tragedy in Indiana, but if it ever happens to you, there can be a happier ending, so stay with me. The truth is that we can never know when the worst possible scenario is going to happen. We shouldn’t live with paralyzing paranoia, but it’s simply best if we’re prepared. I started this newsletter with a mantra: “A little bit of law, a lot of everything else.” So, that’s why I’m going to start by saying something we’re all feeling, law or not: Nobody wants to pay insurance companies $300 a year. I know I don’t. Why do insurance companies need any more than they’ve got? Here’s the kicker: They don’t! But, there is someone who needs insurance — the person who could hit you. Reckless drivers usually don’t even think about getting into an accident, so they pay as little as possible for insurance. Even careful drivers can assume they’ll never get into an accident, so same thing. That all changes the day it happens to you. Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) and underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) are two of the most overlooked and most important types of coverages that bikers can have (aside from liability coverage that protects the biker when they are at fault). UM and UIM do exactly what their names suggest. They protect you and your loved
I know I sound very fun at parties right now, but since it’s also the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer (which helps raise awareness about the dangers of the road for teenagers), I thought it’d be the perfect time to warn our friends about how important your insurance and futures really are. It’s also a good reminder since many of us may be returning to the road after a long period of working from home. You can’t predict the future, but you can protect it, no matter what happens. If you ever have any questions about your insurance and what coverage would be best for you, don’t hesitate to call me. This is a cause that’s near and dear to my heart! I’d be very happy to help you out.

ones when the person at fault has no (or not enough) insurance and no assets or means to otherwise compensate you. Accidents on the road can be extremely dangerous, especially on motorcycles. Personally, it’s shocking how easy it is to be better insured than most trucking companies. Even corporations with plenty of resources and liability don’t want to pay insurance companies. Nobody is alone in this feeling until they fall into medical debt because of an accident.
Have a beautiful, safe August, everyone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, REGINA! A Tribute to One of the Most Incredible People in My Life I’ve mentioned my wife in previous editions and even talked about how inspirational the deep kindness in her heart is to me. However, I don’t think I’ve talked about just how much of a fighter she truly is. One of the pivotal moments of my life was when Regina died. She had been very ill with lupus and had just come home from a hospital stay. I assisted her into the shower but stayed close by.
STUCK INSIDE? 3 Activities to Keep You Busy Summertime means getting out of the house to enjoy the sunshine and the bright blue sky. But even during this great time of year, you may have to spend some of these precious days inside, not outside. Rather than scrolling through social media or reminiscing about better days, here are a few ideas you can use to turn a day spent indoors into a fun summer memory! Get Crafty You’re bound to have a few materials floating around the house that you can use to create a new art project or even start a new hobby. If you have extra sheets of paper lying around, then give origami a go. Do you have a shirt you don’t wear anymore but still love? Turn it into a new pillow cover or a bag. You can also create fun garden decorations by painting rocks, making a wind chime, or repurposing an old boot into a new plant holder. You never know — whatever you choose to do could become your next passion.
Suddenly, I heard her yell my name. She trusted me to catch her as she fell, and I did. I cradled her in my arms and carried her to our bed. By then, I realized she was dead. Knowing that Regina is alive today, you might be thinking that I must be mistaken. She certainly didn’t stay dead, but as a SWAT Commander, I’d seen many dead people — I knew from her pulse, her eyes, and her limp body that Regina had died in my arms. Below is an excerpt from a published book, “Stories of Transformation,” where I was invited to share our story. “In a split second, I was transformed by the realization of how unimportant everything else was. All of my accomplishments — our beautiful home,
Plan Your Next Vacation Spending the day inside might just be the
perfect time to plan your next vacation. Use this time to calculate the expenses of the trip, such as travel, board, food, and souvenirs. You can also research and figure out where you’re going to stay ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or an Airbnb, to optimize your experience. Once you have the groundwork done, you’ll have a better idea of how your trip will go and be able to focus on the fun stuff when the time comes! Change It Up If you’ve been putting off rearranging or reorganizing a room in your house, then a day at home is a great chance to get started. Switching up the layout of your stuff gives your home a fresh new look and provides you with an opportunity to deep-clean your space. If you have a patio or porch, then try sprucing up those outdoor spaces with new furniture, potted plants, or trendy decor. Just imagine how satisfying it will feel once everything is in a new place and sparkling clean. Even when you’d rather be outside enjoying the last days of summer, these indoor activities will keep you entertained and give you something fun to look forward to!
my plans for the future — were all meaningless without her. I realized in an instant that the most wonderful human being I had ever been privileged to know had suddenly died in my arms! “Surprisingly, I didn’t panic. I calmly, perhaps numbly, dialed 9-1-1. I reported in a firm, confident voice, ‘My wife is not breathing. I need an ambulance — now!’ Although I didn’t know this for several weeks, my voice had also been heard thundering through the heavens ... It was heard by my wife and the two faceless angels who were, at that instant, in the process of escorting [Regina] to Heaven. She may have heard my confident voice, but she knew I was about to be crushed. “Even though she was happier in that moment than she had ever been, she knew she had a choice. She could continue with the angels to Heaven or return to this much less-than-perfect world and to her husband. As usual, she thought of someone else first.” After what had been several hours for her and only a few seconds for me, Regina suddenly sprang up and began cursing like a sailor! She’d heard my entire 911 conversation and began to complain to me about how dare I call 911 while she didn’t have any clothes on. Meanwhile, I was absolutely euphoric. Regina is a true warrior — she possessed such stoic grace throughout her illness. We owe so much to her selfless nature and her brilliant heart. She is an incredible inspiration of strength, courage, and character for me and our entire family. Thank you, Regina, my soul mate and life partner — happy birthday!

3 CREATIVE WAYS TO STAY CONNECTED FROM A DISTANCE
Let’s be real: You’re probably tired of hearing about Zoom dinner parties. As effective as video chats can be at keeping us together, it’s also tiring to keep up with the same routines sometimes. It can be invigorating for us and our loved ones to add new activities to the mix. From our family at Sevenish Law to yours, we’re here to help. Start a google doc. Are your friends and family running out of things to watch? Create a Google Doc for everyone to add their latest movie suggestions, share their at-home activity ideas, or post their latest dishes they’re cooking. You could also encourage people to share personal developments in their lives and households for others to comment on. It’s more private than Facebook, easier for everyone to contribute to equally (versus talking over each other in a group call), and a great way to document your circle’s experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Have a virtual Netflix party. There are many ways to do a virtual Netflix party, like pressing the play button at the same time — but you could also use Netflix Party, a simple, free Google Chrome extension that will connect you and loved ones to watch Netflix at the same time with ease. What’s a Google Chrome extension? Think of it like an app on your iPhone, except the iPhone is Google Chrome. You’ll need the Chrome browser in order to use Netflix Party. Play board games online. Miss game nights or want to start one? Pick up some online board games like Uno, Settlers of Catan, or Monopoly, which you can download on either your computer or phone. If you’re especially competitive, this might lead you to losing more friendships than keeping … But at least you’ll make some super fun memories along the way!
Staying connected with loved ones doesn’t call for one-size-fits-all solutions; it means listening intimately to peoples’ needs, including your own. We hope we’ve helped give you some fresh ideas on how to stay connected. May you and yours have a great August!

DEAL WITH YOUR EMOTIONS IN A HEALTHIER WAY
Coping Strategies vs. Coping Mechanisms
What do you do when you feel anxious, sad, or stressed? Do you reach for your phone to scroll through Instagram? Do you turn to a Snickers bar for comfort? Maybe an episode of “Parks and Recreation” is your go-to form of relief. If you use any of these methods, you’re not alone. When humans face difficult situations, they often turn to coping mechanisms to numb emotions and help themselves feel better in the moment. Emotional development expert Alyssa Blask Campbell identifies many common coping mechanisms, including engaging in screen time, making to-do lists, seeking information, indulging in alcohol or cigarettes, and asserting control where possible. Coping mechanisms make you feel better in the moment, but they don’t always help process and deal with emotions in the long run. Coping Strategies vs. Mechanisms Turning to coping mechanisms is a habit you may have learned as a kid. It’s understandable, and it’s okay. But instead, you want to focus on coping strategies that help you work through challenging emotions and find calm again.
Coping strategies are things like breathing exercises, talk therapy, journaling, reading, and physical movement like dancing. While these may take more time to yield results than a TV program or candy bar, tapping into these strategies helps you feel better and process what you’re going through, which allows you to release whatever is causing you strife. Because the way you react when your emotions overwhelm you has an impact on the way you feel during and after that experience, it’s all the more important to understand the different coping tools at your disposal. As you learn to incorporate coping strategies into your life and call on them when you’re dealing with hard emotions, give yourself grace. You can still turn to healthy coping mechanisms when you need them. The key is to also incorporate some of these strategies to help you better process whatever comes your way.
