In most cases, the primary driver of the cost of an air con- veyed scrap and dust collection system is the overall CFM

(cubic feet per minute) of air required to convey the material from the vari- ous pieces of machinery. Because shredding is a key driver of CFM, tailoring your shredder sys- tem as closely as possible to the re- quired task is one way to save mon- ey. This tailoring is often a challenge

Sauer provides intelligent solutions for scoring, slitting, slit-scoring, and perforating on corrugators and floor slitters; and glue tab cutting, creasing, slotting, trimming and scrap chopping on presses. New, featured offerings include FRX Adjustable Folding Rail System and G3 Scoring System: the latest proven creasing technology on the market.

due to the many variables involved, including the sizes of board and cartons to be shredded, as well as the desired piece size of the shredded output. No matter what kind of shredder you use (rotary grinder, rip and tear, or floor sweep shredding/conditioner), shredding places a high dust and CFM load on any system. To complicate matters, shredder operators are always wanting to get through the shredded material as quickly as possible so they can complete their other duties during their shift. That’s why every shredder sizing decision needs to consider the labor involved to feed it. In one installation, a customer had small width paper wound cores that did not justify a large format “standard” width shredder. To solve this problem, G.F. Puhl developed a smaller width version of the shredder to conserve CFM of air while customizing the shredder to the incoming ma- terial size. The impact was subtle in several areas, but it added up to a significant savings because it reduced CFM, horsepower, duct diameter, and separator size. In another application, a customer needed to shred sheets and facer paper on leftover rolls in the same shred- der. The sheets fit in the 90-inch shredder, but the facer paper was 110” wide and could not be un-wound directly into the shredder. To solve this problem, G.F. Puhl added a funnel onto the shredder to pre-fold the paper into the smaller width of the shredder as it was un-wound into the shredder. Earlier in 2019, G.F. Puhl was asked to develop an eco- nomical shredder for triple wall corrugated sheets. These sheets are like plywood in many ways. With G.F. Puhl’s in- house engineering, fabrication, and testing capabilities, a shredder was developed to meet the task, feeding up to five sheets at a time. The net result of these engineered projects was big savings for the customers who received more revenue per pound of scrap by being able to bale it instead of sending it out loose, and in one case, cores were cleaned of scrap for re-use.
