I recently spokewith the PalmBeach Post about the impact of Post Intensive Care Syndrome and wanted to share some of the key points from that conversation with you. The emphasis of our conversation was that when someone with COVID-19 ends up fighting for their life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), after surviving the virus itself, they are hit with a terrible double whammy because of the massive effects of prolonged immobility on the body. This basic concept, unfortunately applies to many people in general who never visit the ICU and are simply immobile and inactive as part of their typical daily life. America Has Put Itself In A Difficult Position With Regard To The State Of Our General Health. As A Society We Suffer Greatly From The Negative Consequences Of Ill Health Including Obesity, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Cancer, And Pulmonary Disease Just To Name A Few. This Puts Us At A Huge Disadvantage When Dealing With Other Major Health Challenges Like COVID-19. A big problem we face is that prior to the COVID-19 epidemic, we had an epidemic of inactivity and poor eating habits. Andmany people do not realize the far reaching negative impact! Rather, somehow and in some bizarre way, we have come to think of all thesemajor impacts that rob us of our zest and vitality for life as “normal.” All major organ systems are negatively impacted by our inactivity and immobilization. Your heart, bones andmuscles are particularly vulnerable. Within the first week of immobility you lose between 12%and 40%of your strength. Other studies show you can literally lose between 14% and 17% of your muscle mass in 3 short days. And the first to go are those large muscles in your legs which puts you at an increased risk of a fall.
