The world’s largest yule log
What a whirlwind it was at the Snow Island cake factory that day! Since the crack of dawn, the re- gion’s best pastry chefs had been hard at work trying to break the world record for the largest yule log. Their goal: to make a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting almost the size of a house. It seemed like an outrageously ambitious chal- lenge, but the Snow Island bakers and their many assistants were confident that their talent and determination would help them succeed. Sitting on bleachers set up for the occasion, seve- ral people watched the scene unfold with great interest. “Look, Capella,” Orion said to his twin sister. “The container for mixing the frosting is as big as the public pool!” “Yum! Chocolate is so tasty,” the gluttonous girl replied. “I would love to just swim in it!” Walking around the factory floor was the top jour- nalist from the Snow Island Gazette, who didn’t want to miss a minute of the momentous occa- sion. With his camera in hand and a gleam in his eye, Gregory Slifer intended to capture the action from every angle. To get the perfect shot of the vat of chocolate frosting, he climbed into a basket on the end of a nearby forklift. An experienced worker used the machine to carefully raise him above the massive tank. “What an incredible view,” Gregory said, leaning a little too far forward.
At that very moment, the strap around his neck meant to hold the camera snapped. Wide eyed, Gregory watched as his prized equipment plum- meted to the chocolatey surface below and sunk into the frosting. Orion and Capella rushed to the reporter’s side. “Mr. Slifer, is your camera waterproof?” Orion asked. “It is indeed! Waterproof and extremely durable,” Gregory replied. “I often use it outdoors when I cover blizzards and ice storms. I’ve always been able to count on it.” “Well, we can fish it out for you, no problem,” Capella declared. “And clean it off, too,” her brother added. After getting permission from the factory’s health and safety director, Capella embarked on the tricky mission. After putting on her scuba gear (which her parents had quickly brought from home), the young girl was strapped to the end of the forklift with a sturdy harness. Unable to contain her excitement, Capella was then lowe- red into the vat of creamy chocolate. A few minutes later, the eight-year-old girl emer- ged. Covered in frosting, she held up the camera for all to see. “Got it,” she cried out. The grateful reporter rushed to her side to thank Capella and retrieve his equipment. Wiping the

How to spruce up your porch for the holidays
One of the simple joys of the holiday season is seeing how people decorate their homes for Christmas. Do you want your own house to turn heads? If so, here are some easy ways to make your porch beautiful and inviting. • Place small potted trees wrapped in fairy lights on either side of the door • Use several matching wreaths to decorate the front door from top to bottom • Wind decorative garlands around the railings, pillars or doorframe • Decorate a second Christmas tree on the front porch (use weatherproof ornaments) • Fill a large pot or Christmas urn with plants to add a touch of greenery • Arrange a pile of wrapped boxes near the entrance to resemble presents

Mode féminine pour les Fêtes : 5 tendances à adopter
Biscuits festifs aux canneberges et au chocolat blanc
Ces biscuits moelleux sauront combler petits et grands à l’heure de la collation. D’ailleurs, pourquoi ne pas en réserver quelques-uns pour le père Noël? Ingrédients (Pour 18 biscuits) • 1/2 tasse de beurre ramolli • 1 1/2 c. à thé d’extrait de vanille • 1 c. à thé d’extrait d’amande • 1 œuf • 1 1/2 tasse de farine • 1 1/2 c. à thé de bicarbonate de soude • 1/2 c. à thé de sel • 1 tasse de pépites de chocolat blanc • 3/4 tasse de canneberges séchées Préparation 1. Préchauffer le four à 350 °F. 2. À l’aide d’un batteur à main ou d’un fouet, bien mélanger le beurre, la cassonade et le sucre blanc. 3. Ajouter les extraits de vanille et d’amande ainsi que l’œuf. Bien mélanger. 4. Incorporer graduellement la farine, le bicar- bonate de soude et le sel jusqu’à l’obten- tion d’un mélange uniforme. 5. Ajouter les pépites de chocolat blanc et les canneberges. Bien mélanger. • 1/2 tasse de cassonade • 1/2 tasse de sucre blanc
6. Façonner des boules d’environ 2 c. à soupe et les déposer à 7. 5 cm les unes des autres sur une plaque à biscuits tapissée de papier parchemin. 8. Cuire de 12 à 15 minutes, une plaque à la fois. 9. Laisser reposer les biscuits un minimum de 5 minutes avant de les servir. Les canneberges sont à l’honneur! Note : Ces biscuits se conservent jusqu’à 2 se- maines dans un contenant hermétique.

Préférez les modèles imprimés et enfilez des escarpins vertigineux pour faire tourner toutes les têtes! 3. Le lilas : dans l’univers de la mode internationale, le lilas n’est plus systématiquement associé au printemps. Ainsi, vous pourriez arborer un tailleur, une veste, une robe ou une jupe dans cette teinte tendre pour le réveillon ou le décompte de fin d’année. Oserez-vous? 4. La fourrure synthétique : les fashionistas qui
adorent l’allure de la fourrure, mais défendent bec et ongles les droits des animaux n’ont plus à se priver du style « poilu »! En effet, de plus en plus de designers proposent des pièces en fausse fourrure dont le fini est bluffant de réalisme. Génial! 5. Les losanges : le motif géométrique chouchou de l’année est le dynamique losange. En noir et blanc ou en différentes couleurs, on le retrouve sur des robes élégantes et fluides… idéales pour festoyer, bref!
