sir. I’se been vaccinated and baptized both, but it didn’t take.” And that is the trouble with the godless crowd in the church. They are willing to run the gamut of forms and ceremonies. They have a form of godliness but they deny the power thereof. Christ says in regard to the moral condi tion of the world at His coming (Matt. 24:37-39) : “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be, for as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.” Christ holds out absolutely no hope that the Gospel which is preached for a wit ness will be accepted by all men, but He definitely teaches that multitudes will reject it (Matt. 25:41). “Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his angels.” MARRIAGE A JOKE The frightful degeneracy evident in the world in high society, in shops and stores and offices; in the dancing parties, where the young people follow every conceivable plan and process of moral degradation in the category of crookedness, marriage has become a joke; the divorce devil dominates a great number of the leading citizens of many communities. The world is better in spots, but it is worse in other spots. God’s true people, who can follow the leadings of the Holy Spirit, are purging their con sciences from dead works to serve the liv ing God. Those who are drunken with pleasure and sensuality are asleep in the daylight, morally and spiritually speaking. The saints are better, and the sinners are worse. Paul prophesies in 2 Timothy the fourth chapter, third and fourth verses, that the time will come when they will not en dure sound doctrine but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers having itching ears and they shall turn away
THE RECORD Look at the record made by those who have deliberately rejected the revealed truth of the Bible concerning the Deity of Jesus Christ and redemption through His atoning and redeeming blood. Consider the fright ful apostasy of any number of English and German and American preachers whose ut terances have been infinitely worse than those of Thomas Paine, Voltaire or Robert Ingersoll. Take the present status of the church membership in America; the major ity of churches seem to have reached the Laodicean period, “They are neither cold nor hot.” They have settled down into the nauseating, lukewarm condition described in the third chapter of Revelation. Persecution purified the church. When the church traveled through fire, or through water, or through blood, her testimony shook the world; when the church became rich and said she had need of nothing, then she lost her power and the Head of the church, Jesus Christ, declares He will spue the church out of His mouth. He is not referring to those who are clean and pure in heart, but He is referring to that tre mendous multitude of unregenerated, un spiritual, godless people in the church who refuse to be led into a knowledge of the truth. The majority of church members in this city never try to lead a soul to Christ from one year’s end to the other. They remind me of a northern man who bought a plan tation in Georgia. One of his friends vis ited him and he said, “I understand there are natives down here whom you call ‘crackers.’ Can you show me one of them, or tell me their peculiarities?” The planter pointed to an object in a distant field and said, “Do you see that brown object? That may be a stump or it may be a ‘cracker.’ You stand here and watch it for thirty minutes. If it moves, it is a stump.” In Atlanta some time ago they had a plague of smallpox and they vaccinated all of the negro school children. The doctor came to one little boy and asked him if he had been vaccinated. He answered, “Yas,
