If you want to be a strong Christian, you must bend your back to the work and “ give all diligence.” . . . No man becomes a vigorous Christian by any other course than giving “ all diligence.” : It is a very lowly virtue. It is like some of the old wives’ recipes for curing diseases with some familiar herb that grows at every cottage door. People will not have that, but if you bring them some medicine from far away, rare and costly, they will jump at that!— A l ex a n d er M a c l a r e n . II. W o r k in g W it h o u t L abor It is sin that makes work to be labor. Our Lord did not say, “ Come unto me, all ye that work,” but, “that labor,” and “ I will give you rest” from labor, that you may work better. — The Sunday School Times. III. A R e m in d er A youth who because of faithful work in a small country store had secured a larger place in a city, reached a hotel at night on his way and asked the clerk to call him at six o’clock in the morning. An overwhelming sense of timidity and unfit ness kept him at the point of deciding to give up his new position. In the morning the clerk called him and he answered. On dressing, he discovered a card under the door on which was written: “Mr. Mallory, you were called at six o’clock and you answered" In a moment he saw the whole situation in regard to his work. He had been called and he had answered. How many times we forget we have been called and that we answered! — The Young Peoples Weekly. M AY 8, 1938 HOW TO CHOOSE A VOCATION WISELY M a t t h e w 25:14-30 Meditation on the Lesson For our consideration today we have the parable of the talents, which pictures the Christian’s responsibility as he is working for the Lord. Our story is that of a rich man who, about to make a journey, distrib uted his wealth among his servants, giving each a portion “ according to his several ability.” He held each one responsible for the use which he made of his amount, not for the size of it. The test involved faith fulness, not ability. So the Lord Jesus Christ intrusts each of His servants with certain talents which He expects will be used to gain more for Him. He is fair and equitable in His distribution. “ The natural gifts are as the vessel which may be large or small, and which receives ac cording to its capacity but which in each case is filled.” The virtue of the five-talent servant lies not in the proportion of his talent, great though that was, but in the spirit with which he regarded it. He immediately set to work, and gained another five talents.

The one who had two talents did the same, and when the master returned, he received exactly the same praise and commendation as did the five-talent servant. But the story of the third man has been well named “The Tragedy o f the Napkin.” In an nouncing the punishment for the one-talent servant, the master declared that he had been an unprofitable servant; he did not say a word about the meagerness of the portion intrusted to the man. The Lord Jesus Christ has endowed each of us with certain talents. In the case of some o f us, the bestowal seems to be rather insignificant, compared with that of others, but a complaining spirit because of our lack is a direct reflection upon the good ness and justice of our Lord. What we possess is H is; we are simply stewards. Therefore, it is our duty to put what we have to work. This is the determining factor in the “ finding”— not “choice”— of our vocations. God has given us certain natural abilities, which make us individu ally adaptable to various types of work. The all-important facts to remember are that they are His possessions, and that He purposes they shall be used for His glory. The Christian is twice owned by the Lord Jesus for He is not only Creator but also Saviour in His relationship to His blood- bought ones. The issue is this: Is the vocation I am considering one which will gratify my own desires, or is it the one which will most glorify Christ? Is it the one He has chosen for me? That is the question. As sug gested last week, we are not all intended
