that lust may and can be superseded by love, which will produce the more desirable results. Righteousness and purity are abid ing, while fleshly gratification is fleeting. How can we know what is right and what is wrong? Our consciences must be regulated by the W ord of G od; in them selves they are not dependable. What honor young people bestow upon the name of the Lord, when they: consider His approval more desirable than the applause of the “gang” ! Steadfast maintenance of Christ- like ideals never goes unrewarded, and it produces a wealth of Christian favor and friendship which the sacrificing of them could never obtain. Are you trying it for yourself? The passion to be popular rules many people. W e have contests to select the most popular person in this or that group; we have questionnaires by which we may de termine the grade of our own popularity. Many books are written instructing us how to develop our personalities with a view to influencing people . . . Surely there can be no objection to the desire to be winsome, to cultivate grace and courtesy and tact. A radiant life makes others happy wher ever it is found. Many times, however, the craving for popularity is self-centered, and it frequently specializes in sham and display in order to produce effect. This is being popular at too high a price. — Arnold’s Practical Commentary. Helps for the Leader I. W h a t P r ice ?
a word gave him a powerful grip of the hand. It was a courageous act, for it might have meant death to befriend the “ heretic.” Huss turned and said that only God and himself knew how much that handclasp meant to him in that supreme hour. Somebody had understood him. —H. A. B anks . M AY 22, 1938 BEING POPULAR WITHOUT SACRIFICING HIGH IDEALS 1 C orinthians 13:4-7; J ohn 8:29; 2 T im o t h y 2:22-25 Meditation on the Lesson Every normal young person desires to be popular. Few achievements are quite so satisfactory to him as winning the love and companionship of a lively company of con genial young people. It is a right and natural desire to want to have a good time in the highest sense. However, Satan de sires to counterfeit any part of a worth while program that is glorifying to God. But the devil carefully disguises his imita tion. Thus he has perverted the pure and holy impulses o f life until many times young people, in their endeavor to have a good time and to be popular with the crowd, are led into questionable associ ations. Because the Lord knew the problems which would confront the youth of our day, He has provided clear instruction in His Word concerning our conduct with others. He Himself was faced many times with a choice between a move for popularity and the will of His Father, and yet He could say: “ I do always those things that please him [G o d ]” (John 8:29). Can we say that? Is our main objective that of pleas ing our heavenly Father rather than of gratifying our own desires or the wishes of the group with which we may be identi fied? This is often a hard choice, but it is the touchstone of our spiritual condition; we are not in close fellowship with our living Saviour if we do not actually yearn to be well-pleasing unto Him. It often costs the friendship of cherished chums to take a firm stand for Christ, but the com pensations outweigh the self-denial. In that surpassingly beautiful “Love Chapter,” 1 Corinthians 13, we have the most dependable program for popularity ever conceived. When carried out in the power of the Holy Spirit, this formula has' never failed to produce a personality which was dynamic, magnetic, and far-reaching in its influence. In modern English, the word “ charity” in these verses is more accurately expressed by the word “ love.” This passage 'describes the attributes and qualities of one who is filled with the love of Christ, and who is, consequently, be loved. It is not so much what one does, but what one is that spells lasting popu larity. In writing to young Timothy, the expe rienced Paul firmly, though tenderly, said: “ Flee also youthful lusts: but follow right eousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out o f a pure heart” (2 Tim. 2:22). Timothy doubtless had felt the tug of “youthful lusts” ; almost every young person has. But Paul declares
