Let’s Get Fyzical

AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUSH HEALTHMASTERS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

A

s a physical therapist, business owner, and individual, I constantly seek knowledge. I’m always on the hunt for new methodologies and techniques that will provide the best possible outcomes for my patients. All of us at HealthMasters know that, despite our abundant successes, there are endless opportunities for us to grow as clinicians. When I see a chance to better serve our community and to expand our reach and abilities, I’ll jump at it every time. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that HealthMasters Hand and Physical Therapy Centers is becoming a franchisee for Fyzical, one of the most respected and effective physical therapy collectives in the country! This has been in the works for a while, and I’m thrilled to finally start rolling out the fantastic benefits to our patients and staff. It was a decision that came down to growth — not so much in revenue or numbers, but in our expertise and reach as physical therapists. With this new partnership comes a treasure trove of tried-and-true approaches across the PT field, opening up entirely new avenues to train our therapists and maximize our impact. This is especially true when it comes to Fyzical’s comprehensive fall risk prevention programs. For years, we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of falls per year of elderly individuals, stealing the independence of millions and causing potentially deadly health issues. Fyzical has access to a staggering number of cutting-edge resources for improving patients’ balance. This gives us the foundation to help this massively underserved population in a big way. As I’ve watched the troubling trends in balance issues, I’ve looked far and wide for a strategy that could adequately address this epidemic. Last year, it finally became clear: Fyzical is absolutely the best path forward. The shift should come with widespread positive changes for my team and me, but the real benefit is for our patients. By combining our unique knowledge with the collective data and experience of thousands of physical therapists under the Fyzical umbrella,

our robust skill set grows substantially. In addition, Fyzical’s resources will allow us to offer new screenings for people that will help them not just with rehabilitative treatment, but with their overall health as well. I know my clients will be concerned with the possibility of our clinic going “corporate” and potentially losing the atmosphere that makes HealthMasters such a great place to recover. But the beauty of the Fyzical approach is that we gain all their excellent resources without changing the personality of our practice or staff. We may be bolstering our abilities, but the heart of the business still remains. Personally, I couldn’t be more excited about the transition. It’s been a long time coming. It’s surreal to finally be able to let my team and patients know about these incredible changes on the horizon. Now our team will be able to transform even more lives for the better, providing the tools for a pain-free life. With Fyzical by our side, the future is charged with positivity and possibility.

GARDENING: Bringing Family Together

Why You Should Consider Investing in a Family Garden

Deciding on Plants When it comes to deciding which

After spending a winter cooped up inside with your family, there might be a little tension between everyone. Fortunately, it’s spring, and the warm weather, melting snow, and blooming flowers offer a good way to ease restlessness. This season, why not bring your family closer together by starting a family garden? A Learning Experience Nearly every step in the gardening process can be a learning experience for kids and parents alike. Begin by discussing where you should start and why, what supplies you’ll need, and the types of plants you want to grow. Gardening also offers opportunities to learn about science, ecology, and nutrition. Collaboration Gardening gives your family a chance to collaborate. When you’re stuck inside for long periods, you may be spending time together, but it’s usually not quality time. Working in a group to create and maintain a garden is a hands-on experience for everyone. It’s a chance to get the whole family involved with a single project, and you can literally share the fruits of your labor.

plants you want in your garden, there are many variables to consider. Do you want to grow edible plants, ones that have magnificent blossoms,

or ones that are easy to care for? Flowers are a good start if you want a plant that grows a little faster; plus, they lend a pop of color to your garden. Growing vegetables is also rewarding, as the kids will take great pleasure in eating what they’ve grown. Other possibilities include sunflowers, blackberries, peas, and lettuce. You might be surprised at how willingly children eat their greens when they’ve had a hand in growing them. Family gardens can bring something new and fresh to your home. So, get outside, enjoy the sun, and discover the joys of plants and gardening.

Our Newest Physical Therapist! Meet Kate Roby,

At HealthMasters, we pride ourselves on giving patients inexpensive, natural strategies to remedy their pain for the long run. We know that when you’re in pain, it’s not just an annoyance. Pain can cascade into every aspect of your life. Medications and injections may curb

the ways it empowered patients to transform their bodies with direct solutions that used the mechanics of the body instead of medications. As a student looking to intern at a clinic, Kate chose us out of 30 options. “My mom was a patient here back in 2011,” she explains. “She fell onto her outstretched arm while walking her dogs and broke her shoulder. After surgery, HealthMasters is where she went.” It was her mother’s glowing recommendation that led her to seek out Louis Zuniga and his team for her future career. Here, she found a warm, inviting place where everyone works together to provide patients with real results. “Honestly, for me, it’s the people,” she says. “I love all my co-workers. We’re all different, but we work well together, and there’s a lot of collaboration.” Though Kate’s only been here a few short weeks, our patients have already discovered her abundant compassion and eagerness to do whatever it takes to facilitate healing. She’s certainly already a staple around the clinic, and we look forward to being her PT home for years to come!

that pain for a while, but they don’t address the cause of the pain, allowing it to flare up at any time. Instead, we want to uproot your discomfort at the source and help you return to the activities you love. Our newest therapist, Kate Roby, has always wanted to help people improve their lives, but her career path took a turn when she headed off to college. “I was actually a pre-pharmacy major,” she says, “But as I learned more about the drug industry, I started to realize that becoming a pharmacist wasn’t the path for me.” Instead, she turned to physical therapy, inspired by

Whatever your issue — be it poor balance, a serious injury, or persistent pain — it’s important to seek physical therapy as soon as you can. But all of us at HealthMasters know how difficult that first step can be. Patients often come in worried that they’ll be put through an agonizing set of exercises as their physical therapist tests their physical limits. That’s not how we do things at HealthMasters. We understand that it can be scary to start a new treatment program, so we do everything we can to make you feel relaxed and comfortable from the very start. Our physical therapists undergo hundreds of hours of detailed training so they can diagnose and treat any pain you experience. We’re the furthest thing from a “no pain, no gain” clinic.

the details of your specific issue before coming in for your first visit — the more details, the better!

After that initial consultation, your physical therapist will guide you through several simple tests to zero in on the nature of your musculoskeletal dysfunction. Depending on your issue, you may go through a few flexibility tests, functional mobility assessments, or exercises to test your range of motion. No matter what, these tests shouldn’t hurt. If they do, let us know, and we’ll tweak our approach to better suit your needs, giving you crystal-clear instructions throughout the process.

Using this information, your physical therapist will develop a possible treatment plan for your specific situation. When determining the best path forward, they’ll factor in not just your injury, but your entire body. All in all, it’s a simple, painless process. Most of our patients leave feeling energized and excited to take the first step toward a pain-free life. If you’re interested in eliminating your pain at the source and getting back to your everyday life, give us a call at one of our three locations, and set up your free consultation today!

When you first come into HealthMasters, we’ll start off by asking you a few questions about your condition. We’re interested in more than just your injury. In addition to learning the details of your pain, we’re curious what brought you to HealthMasters, why you’re seeking treatment, and what you hope to accomplish by the time you leave. That makes Sweden and its Scandinavian neighbors a great place to see the phenomenon. From December through April, you’ll have your best chance of seeing the northern lights. On Oahu’s North Shore, head to Turtle Beach, which gets its name from the many turtles that nest along its shores. During late spring and summer, the waves subside, allowing turtles to crawl onto the beach to lay their eggs. Baby turtles hatch at night and make their way to the water by the light of the moon. If you do head to the beach at night to see this spectacle, don’t use white light, as it can disrupt the turtles’ progress (that means no flash photography). Eco tip: Look, but don’t touch!
