SNC fishery is in “reeling” good shape
ies. The 4000-square-kilometre watershed stretches from the St. Lawrence Seaway at Prescott to the mouth of the South Nation River where it empties into the Ottawa River at Plantagenet. “People are fooled because many of the streams within the watershed are shallow and murky,” stated Ryan Robson, SNC re- source technician. “But that doesn’t mean they don’t support aquatic life, and they do in abundance.” Robson, with assistance from summer students employed at SNC this season, has been out in the field on “electro-fishing ex-
peditions” as part of the conservation agen- cy’s regular monitoring and cataloguing of local fish species. Electro-fishing involves using a low-voltage jolt to stun fish within a limited range. Robson and the students then retrieve the stunned fish with nets for identification and measurement records. After the fish re- cover, they are then put back in the water. They do not suffer any permanent damage from the experience. So far this year the SNC staff have identi- fied 26 of the known species native to the watershed from trips to 21 different sites
in the main river and its tributaries. Most of the fish sampled during the season were northern pike and smallmouth bass. The highest concentration for fish found so far during the monitoring program was in the Bearbrook sub-watershed. “The presence of game fish, such as pike and bass, is particularly gratifying,” stated Robson, “because conditions must be ideal to support them. Along the way, we also gain information about general health of the various species, propagation, predators, and habitat. The results continue to indicate the South Nation fishery is alive and well.” Come join us for our One Stop Shop/bake sale! September 14th, 2013, at the Jean-Marc Lalonde arena (second floor), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is the perfect event for shoppers to find everything they need. There will be different companies getting together to sell their products at this location. You will find a vast variety from cookware, home decor, toys, home made goods and much more. A raffle will be held as a fundraiser to help give funds to the Rockland Scouts. All proceeds from the bake sale will be given to the Rockland Scouts.

The“stunned”expression in the eyes of the walleye that SNC technician Ryan Robson has in his hands will fade away soon enough in time for the fish to return to the water and swim far away from electric angling. But not before Robson and his assistants take its weight and other measurements to go into the regional conservation agen- cy’s records for this year on the state of the South Nation River watershed.
