States, pressure provincial governments to improve healthcare, and rebuild the party to regain the trust of Canadians. /PDBOEJEBUFTIBWFCFFOBOOPVODFEZFU The next federal election is scheduled for the fall of 2025, and the riding of Glengarry-Pres- cott-Russell will be officially renamed and redrawn as Prescott-Russell-Cumberland. Not Seeking Re-Election Drouin announced last year that he would not seek a fourth term, honoring a commitment he made to his wife when he first entered the demanding and high-profile world of federal politics. Drouin, 40, was first elected as the eas- tern Ontario riding’s federal representative in 2015. “I told my wife that if I was going to do this [enter politics], I would leave after anywhere between eight and 12 years,” said Drouin. “If I were to run again, it would go beyond that timeframe. This life is hard on families. I have to be in so many places in the evenings and on weekends. I always use a hockey analogy: you have to know when to get on the ice and when to get off. It’s time to get off the ice.” Drouin, who has a five-year-old son, said he was 80 percent certain he wouldn’t run again after the last federal election in 2021. He informed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of his decision to leave federal politics on March 21, 2024. Drouin is currently the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Lawrence MacAulay.
Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Liberal Member of Parliament Francis Drouin believes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the right decision by announcing his resignation as Canada’s prime minis- ter and leader of the federal Liberal Party. “I have heard from my constituents for a long time regarding what they think Prime Minister Trudeau should do and what the future of the party should be,” said Drouin, who announced last year that he won’t seek a fourth term as the MP for Glengarry- Prescott-Russell. “People are divided; many believe he should step down, while some think he should stay on. I think he made the right decision by stepping down.” Trudeau faced months of mounting pres- sure from fellow MPs and senior Liberals urging him to resign. On January 6, he announced that he would not lead the party in the next federal election, citing internal conflicts within the party as a key factor in his decision. Governor General Mary Simon prorogued Parliament until March 24, by which time a new Liberal leader will be in place, and Parliament will resume. “I know there is this anti-Trudeau senti- ment out there, but I honestly don’t see much of an alternative in [Conservative Leader Pierre] Poilievre,” said Drouin. “He has never had a job outside of Parliament and has been living off what I call ‘Parliament welfare,’ just

Prior to Trudeau’s resignation, many pun- dits and experts believed the decisive blow came when then-Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland suddenly resigned on the day she was scheduled to deliver Canada’s fiscal economic statement.
