CATHEDRAL SCHOOL FACULTY AND STAFF ON THE MOVE

R&G: What was your favorite CSB activity or event? PO: The Christmas concerts. R&G: What is next for you? PO: I am continuing my practice as an Educational Therapist and am developing a small group course that integrates language arts with the visual arts for dyslexic students. I have returned to my more rigorous art practice and am excited to work with all of the cardboard waste created by Amazon during the pandemic. I have an empty plot of yard space that my husband and I are now designing, and I am so happy to have more time with my husband, family, and friends to share in travel, hiking, biking, and conversations around tea.

Certainly, you can’t really teach in a school like Cathedral School for Boys and not be influenced, in some way, by the commitment and creative energy of its teachers and staff. R&G: What would you do if you weren’t at CSB? PO: At one time, I was very interested in housing, particularly the impact of “urban renewal” on displaced persons. Prior to teaching, I worked with the S.F. Housing Authority to learn about low-income housing efforts in San Francisco. R&G: What was your favorite lunch menu item? PO: Curried rice, veggies, and chicken.

Q&A WITH SARAH MURPHY

Ms. Murphy decided to hang up her safety goggles after 21 years as an Upper School Science Teacher at Cathedral. She’ll be moving to a part-time position in the science department at Lick-Wilmerding High School.

R&G: What would you do if you weren’t at CSB? SM: Not sure how to answer this one. R&G: What was your favorite lunch menu item? SM: Ummm, pulled pork salad—a classic!! R&G: What was your favorite CSB activity or event? SM: Lessons and Carols—I’ll miss that tradition!

R&G: What did you like best about working at CSB? SM: The humor and compassion of middle school boys and the talent and dedication of my colleagues. I will miss everyone so much! R&G: Which colleagues made the biggest impact on you? SM: All of my colleagues have had an enormous impact, but most recently Rashod Cotton helped me experience this past year differently than I might have otherwise. He was so confident about our ability to handle whatever came our way that I became more confident myself.

Red&Gold: What were you doing before you began teaching here? Sarah Murphy: I was teaching at a tiny independent school while taking courses for my credential. R&G: How many years did you work at CSB? SM: 21 R&G: What roles did you have at CSB? SM: Science teacher, science team lead, new teacher mentor, SMART liaison, Upper School women’s affinity group organizer. Halloween costume instigator. R&G: Do you remember what your first day was like? SM: Sad news, I don’t remember what yesterday was like.

R&G: What is next for you? SM: I’ll be teaching bio at Lick-Wilmerding.
