WHAT’S HAPPENING

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Happy New Year from Joseph Charter School,

2ND | MRS. LYMAN This month, we continued on solving word problems and reading skills. We created gingerbread houses and loved caroling at the Alpine House in Joseph. This month, we’ll be learning about all kinds of natural disasters. 3RD | MRS. OLSON This month we learned about elements of drama by reading two plays and focusing on dialogue. Then students practiced using dialogue in their own narrative writing. We also compared fractured fairy tales based on the original Gingerbread Man fairy tale from 1875. In January, we’ll be focusing on Native American tribes and begin writing cursive letters. 4TH | MRS. GROVER This month, students finished creating, painting and labeling their topographic maps of Oregon. They worked on mastering two digit by two digit multiplication and writing personal narratives with a focus on the editing portion of the writing process. We enjoyed listening to their holiday concert and seeing how well they play their recorders. We finished the month with many activities such as key chain braiding, cookie decorating and Bingo. Next month, we will focus on Native American Tribes in the United States and create presentations of a variety of culturesm, multi-digit division, and informative writing. 5TH | MISS. ROBYN We enjoyed learning about the winter solstice last month and now know that the tilt of the earth as it orbits around the sun is about 24 degrees, which gives the northern hemisphere the shortest day of the year this December 21st. We also spent a lot of time on fractions and how to find common denominators so we can add them. In P.E. we had a contest for who could hold plank position the longest. This month, students will have a chance to read some nonfiction books relating to Fishtrap’s Big Read events which highlights struggles over equal pay, labor, and historical events surrounding going on strike. We will also take another look at the place value chart and multiplying double digits. . 6TH | MRS. HITE This month we will be focusing on writing informational essays. We will also be participating in the Big Read with a nonfiction book titled KIDS ON STRIKE! Through this book, we will study the travails of boys and girls in the labor force in America starting in the 1800’s. Next month, we will continue with informational writing using two to three sources to write our essays and concluding the Big Read. The 6th graders will begin their fundraising for the Oregon Coast trip happening in June, and the trip can be supported by purchasing a raffle ticket to win many of the wonderful items.

In December, we hosted a presentation of our strategic plan along with a taco feed. We are truly excited about the plan and appreciate ShanRae Hawkins for leading us through the process. I would also like to thank all the people that put so many hours into the plan over the Summer and Fall. If you did not get a copy or would like to visit about the plan, feel free to reach out to our office and we can make it happen. Earlier this month, the Jo-Hi Wrestling tournament was a huge success with 19 teams in attendance, competing for the wonder- ful Dan Moncrief painting as a prize for winning the tournament. We had both Men’s and Women’s champions, and fun was had by all.

IMNAHA | MRS. WARNOCK We spent a lot of time in December writing, practicing, and performing our annual Christmas play. After sharing a tamale dinner and hot chocolate bar with our community, the students performed The Clumsy Elf and the Snowglobe, recited poems, and sang songs to a packed house! The evening ended with a surprise visit from Santa! We are excited to participate in this year’s Big Read, and have been researching the Industrial Revolution and Labor Movement as we prepare to read The Breaker Boys and Brave Girl. PRE K | MRS. MCWATERS December was filled with Christmas Magic and treats galore from our North Pole friends, Elvie & Elvis! We enjoyed watching creativity blossom and kiddos working hard to meet their individual goals before the break. Before the break, we enjoyed having the kiddos families come in for a mini Christmas concert and a pancake lunch with the most delicious hot chocolate! This month, we will be participating in Hearts Across America where we exchange a class Valentine’s card to different Pre-K classes around the country, our goal is to receive one from each of the states!.Our class is also working on the Dog Sled bags and are so excited to be able to showcase our class’s creativity! K | MRS. SHETLER This past month we drew names for a Secret Santa gift exchange. We then loaded up to our local Soroptimist and shopped for our person! This month, we will be planning Snowflake nigh with fun math games and snowman activities to engage students and families. 1ST | MRS. BLANKENSHIP December saw us receiving packages from Globe Trot Scott on his travels around the world to find holiday traditions. We learned a craft from Mexico, gingerbread houses from Germany, a tasty treat from France, and how to make a sandman in Australia.

MIDDLE + HIGH SCHOOL

LIBRARY We’re getting lots of new books in the library, including award-win- ning non-fiction for all grades, new editions of old classics, and award winning easy readers. Families are always welcome to come in to the library and check out our books! BUSINESS/TECH 7th graders are learning creative uses for Google Slides and Adobe Programs as a drag-and- drop workspace, designing with Kindergarten partners. Some designed with selectable eyes, mouths, feet, etc. 8th graders are learning about engineering/ design careers using Canva, designing brochures about people in these careers, their respon- sibilities, salary, work condi- tions, demand, and educational experience. They also digitially designed 3D snowflakes to hang in the classroom.. Entrepreneurship class is making business plans, designing web- sites, creating logos and business cards. They introduce their business to other students and it’s tested by Seniors and staff members. We’re keeping financial records and good business prac- tices to promote their businesses. In Business 101, students are learning about how to job search, write a resume, and build a cover letter, and mock interview with local business professionals.

For Senior Career Explorations class and Personal Finance, we explored the role of the individ- ual consumer in our economy, financing, budgeting, banking relationships, borrowing, insur- ance, real estate, investing, credit, retirement and personal taxes, and using this time to apply to scholarships, grants, and colleges. AG SCIENCE We wrapped up December with students focusing on public speaking and beginning their work on parliamentary proce- dure. In addition, all students in our agricultural program of study—which includes shop and manufacturing, aviation, and fire science—completed their online records documenting their work experiences from the year. These work experiences vary widely, from students owning their own businesses, such as raising livestock, cutting and stacking firewood, assisting with gardening, and lawn mowing, to working for local businesses or their families. Students also tracked their community service hours, school and sports involve- ment, and other activities. This information is recorded in an online system called TheAET, a valuable tool that helps students organize their experiences in one place. It supports them in earning FFA degrees, creating profes- sional resumes, and providing verifiable records of their time

and earnings throughout junior high and high school. This system is especially beneficial when applying for scholarships. During January, Juniors and Seniors will be applying for their State FFA Degrees and working on parlia- mentary procedure and public speaking. All of our Leadership Development Events will take place in February. PERFORMING ARTS December was a busy month for the JCS Performing Arts Dept. The 4th-6th Theater class held their production of “Holly Jolly Jukebox”. Grades K-3 and 4-12 performed their annual Christmas choir concert. STEAM Fourth graders are learning about electrical energy systems. They can explain how energy from a natural source can be converted into electricity and then transport- ed through wires to an electrical device. The device then converts the electricity into a form of ener- gy that can be used by humans. Pictured here is a fourth grader testing an electrical system that uses a solar panel to convert solar energy into electricity and trans- port it to different devices such as a LED light, a buzzer, and a fan. The students will be using this knowledge to solve the problem of a blackout that has happened in a major city.
