THE EYRIE

MIDDLE + HIGH SCHOOL

LIBRARY We’re getting lots of new books in the library, including award-win- ning non-fiction for all grades, new editions of old classics, and award winning easy readers. Families are always welcome to come in to the library and check out our books! BUSINESS/TECH 7th graders are learning creative uses for Google Slides and Adobe Programs as a drag-and- drop workspace, designing with Kindergarten partners. Some designed with selectable eyes, mouths, feet, etc. 8th graders are learning about engineering/ design careers using Canva, designing brochures about people in these careers, their respon- sibilities, salary, work condi- tions, demand, and educational experience. They also digitially designed 3D snowflakes to hang in the classroom.. Entrepreneurship class is making business plans, designing web- sites, creating logos and business cards. They introduce their business to other students and it’s tested by Seniors and staff members. We’re keeping financial records and good business prac- tices to promote their businesses. In Business 101, students are learning about how to job search, write a resume, and build a cover letter, and mock interview with local business professionals.

For Senior Career Explorations class and Personal Finance, we explored the role of the individ- ual consumer in our economy, financing, budgeting, banking relationships, borrowing, insur- ance, real estate, investing, credit, retirement and personal taxes, and using this time to apply to scholarships, grants, and colleges. AG SCIENCE We wrapped up December with students focusing on public speaking and beginning their work on parliamentary proce- dure. In addition, all students in our agricultural program of study—which includes shop and manufacturing, aviation, and fire science—completed their online records documenting their work experiences from the year. These work experiences vary widely, from students owning their own businesses, such as raising livestock, cutting and stacking firewood, assisting with gardening, and lawn mowing, to working for local businesses or their families. Students also tracked their community service hours, school and sports involve- ment, and other activities. This information is recorded in an online system called TheAET, a valuable tool that helps students organize their experiences in one place. It supports them in earning FFA degrees, creating profes- sional resumes, and providing verifiable records of their time

and earnings throughout junior high and high school. This system is especially beneficial when applying for scholarships. During January, Juniors and Seniors will be applying for their State FFA Degrees and working on parlia- mentary procedure and public speaking. All of our Leadership Development Events will take place in February. PERFORMING ARTS December was a busy month for the JCS Performing Arts Dept. The 4th-6th Theater class held their production of “Holly Jolly Jukebox”. Grades K-3 and 4-12 performed their annual Christmas choir concert. STEAM Fourth graders are learning about electrical energy systems. They can explain how energy from a natural source can be converted into electricity and then transport- ed through wires to an electrical device. The device then converts the electricity into a form of ener- gy that can be used by humans. Pictured here is a fourth grader testing an electrical system that uses a solar panel to convert solar energy into electricity and trans- port it to different devices such as a LED light, a buzzer, and a fan. The students will be using this knowledge to solve the problem of a blackout that has happened in a major city.
