FROM TEXAS TO VIENNA: POP ART GOES INTERNATIONAL
The homeplace of Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud, Vienna has long been a bastion of art and culture. A tour of the city’s vast number of art galleries and historic buildings can take you from Paleolithic figurines in the Naturhistorisches Museum to the iconoclastic architecture of Hundertwasserhaus and modern street art along the Donau Kanal. Its enviable art collection – which currently includes ‘The Kiss’ by Gustav Klimt and ‘The Last Judgement’ by Hieronymus Bosch – received the international treatment in August 2020, when Pop Art legend James Francis Gill held his explosive Reflections exhibition at the Kunstforum Wien. Renowned for its private exhibitions of major 20th- century and modern art, the institution displayed over 40 artworks by the Texan artist, many of which came directly from his studio. The exhibition also featured a series of new paintings on the theme of Women in Cars , which is influenced by photographs from magazines and reflects the spirit of the times. James’ international success began in 1967, when he exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Described as ‘contemporary witness of an entire generation’, the artist found fame with his painterly realism and occasionally abstract Pop Art scenes. His artworks now reside in permanent collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
