Favoured by artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, J.M.W. Turner, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and Wassily Kandinsky, watercolour paints are one of the most popular mediums. Through mastery of pigments, an artist can change the transparency of colours to create beautiful effects on paper, canvas, stone, wood and even plastic. Watercolours gained popularity after papyrus was invented in ancient Egypt in around 3,000 B.C.E. and can also be seen in medieval manuscripts
and Asian art from China, Japan and Korea. In the 18th century, portable watercolour boxes were invented, enabling artists to travel and paint en plein air. Former Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year finalist Samuel Hencher uses watercolours to capture Birmingham’s iconic waterways, streets and landmarks. He applies up to three layers of glaze to achieve a slightly mottled finish, giving his work an authentic feel.
Not for the faint-hearted, this immersive genre sees viewers interact with a computer- simulated environment. Dating back to the first virtual reality headset in the late 1960s, this technology went on to be used by NASA and contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons, featuring at prestigious events like the Venice Biennale. Engaging the senses – sight, hearing and touch – VR transports audiences to a real or imaginary world. Two of our artists, Scarlett Raven and Marc Marot, have created their own brand of ‘augmented reality’, to take our collectors to the battlefields of World War One and inside the minds of history’s greatest painters. Layers of oil paint are integrated with animation, graphics, music and narration to reveal an alternative dimension. Download the free Artivive app to see for yourself!
