FEBRUARY 2025

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA February is Black History Month — a time to honor the profound contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history. It’s also a moment to reflect on the enduring impact of their resilience, creativity and courage in shaping our society. This month, we are proud to present programming that delves deeply into stories of movement, transformation and the ongoing pursuit of justice. We invite you to join us for “Great Migrations: A People on the Move,” a compelling new four-part documentary series from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Airing Tuesday evenings at 8 pm, the series examines three monumental migrations that redefined what it means to be Black in America. From the Great Migration out of the Deep South to the North and West, to the reverse migration back to the South, and the recent influx of Africans and West Indians, these movements reshaped American culture and identity. This groundbreaking series sheds light on these pivotal journeys and their impact. On February 17 at 9 pm, we’re proud to air the “Minnesota Experience” film “Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story.” Known as “Minnesota’s First Lady of Civil Rights,” Dr. Johnson reflects on her lifelong fight for equality and the lessons she imparts to inspire the next generation of changemakers. Then, on February 21 at 8 pm, “American Masters” premieres “The Disappearance of Miss Scott,” chronicling the extraordinary, yet largely forgotten life of Hazel Scott. A jazz prodigy, Hollywood star, and the first Black American to host a network TV show, Scott boldly challenged racism and segregation. Yet, her career was derailed during the McCarthy era after unjust accusations of communist ties. This film is a powerful testament to her enduring legacy and courage. These stories — of migration, transformation and resilience — are made possible through your support. Thank you for championing TPT’s mission to inform, inspire, and enrich our community.

Great Migrations: A People on the Move

Warm regards,

The Disappearance of Miss Scott

Meet the Team Behind Pledge BY KEVIN YANG

David : It's really the best way for a public television station to go to the users of the service and explain our case to why someone should support.

How do you all decide what programs to choose for Pledge?

David : Programming is often a little different than the main schedule. You're looking for programs that can do one of many things that can make people feel nostalgic about the time that isn't here anymore. It can make them feel smarter because they're watching this. Blair : We have a specific lineup of programs that we can use for this, so we obviously try to utilize the most local, the most poignant, and the most timely and topical shows that we can find. What kinds of support do you receive from other departments at TPT and from the greater community? David : We work very closely with our programming department who help us build the schedule. We work with marketing to help us promote the shows that we are pledging. We work with the production staff and the engineers to make sure that the product gets on the air. Blair : We also use a variety of different volunteers and local people as talent on-air. We go through the halls of TPT and recruit people. So, I think the magic there is that people that are either producers are involved in marketing or in other departments of TPT get to find out how and why we do things in pledge.

Have you ever wondered how pledge drives at TPT come together? We sat down with Membership staff members, David Preston, Blair Christie, and Westley Johnson, to learn more about the ins and outs of putting a pledge drive on air.

How would you describe Pledge for someone who knows nothing about it?

Westley : A couple of times throughout the year, we’ll go on-air and say, hey, because we're a public entity that's supported by you, the viewers, you should donate so that we can continue to stay public and commercial free. We try and choose shows that we think people will be excited to see and then stop a couple times throughout the course of the show and say to our viewers, support us! Blair : Yep, we're kind of that little nudge that comes up every once in a while, that says, hey, don't you want to support the programming that you like?

What makes our station’s approach to Pledge unique?

@twincitiespbs

FEBRUARY 2025

David : We have always had a slightly different philosophy on pledge than a lot of stations because we don't pledge as much as most stations. We have such a loyal viewership that we fill the niche that we need by pledge in in a short amount of time. If someone's a member, they're going to stay a member for a long time, and we appreciate that about our folks.

Blair : I get to interact with the programming department, the people that select the producers, the editors, the shooters. I get to see what projects they're working on, and I know that those projects are funded in some way, shape or form, either directly or indirectly through what membership does.

What are some of your favorite moments working on Pledge?

What’s an area you’ve seen evolve during your time working on Pledge?

Blair : My favorite moment was recording testimonials for Pledge. When I actually got to interact with actual viewers and people that love TPT and all the great programming. Several of the people shed a tear because they grew up with it. Westley : I remember the first time I interacted with Pledge, and I came in to do just a small talent spot before I worked in membership. I think it’s astounding, live television, roughly 45 people all working together and there's a floor director that goes five, four, three, and then points to you and the camera is live to everyone in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It’s a thrill the first time, the second time, and the 100th time that you do it. David : It is the thrill when it works. One of the first times I really remember was the time on the very first “Lost Twin Cities”. This was when we had phones with dials that ring. We didn't even start talking. We put the phone numbers up and the phones, you could just hear them running through the banks. That's when we had 35 volunteers at that time, and it was just insane. That thrill of people appreciating the work that we do.

David : So, I've been here 43 years, so I've seen everything, but I remember when I started as a telemarketer. but back in that day, premiums were not a thing. You'd have a coffee mug and a tote bag, and that was pretty much it. It wasn't until the mid- 80s that show-specific premiums came out. Blair : But it's also evolved to be more experiential, right? So, concert tickets, in-person events, wine tastings, which has been a great evolution. Westley : The tone of people who are pledging has moved away from, I need this physical thing, and instead towards experiences. For example, our concert ticket offers always perform really well. People are excited to get out and go see live music.

How does Pledge support the greater work happening at our station?

Westley : Member support is roughly half of our budget and although only 12% of it comes from Pledge, the ripple effect it has on how we do the rest of the fundraising budget is huge. David : We have 117 thousand members and about half of them have interacted with us during a pledge. We have loyal members that have been members for 20-30+ years and at one point that was really the main way that most people came into the system. It gives us the ability to tell our case to viewers. That's the impact.

Blair : It's a little art, little science and-

David : A lot of luck.

NEXT AVENUE SPECIAL SECTION

A Legend in His Own Right By Amy Carlson Gustafson

"People come from all over the world to tour the Apollo, and it's a beautiful thing."

Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross, Little Richard, the Supremes – the list truly seems endless – have all performed here. Throughout its 90 years, the institution has shown unwavering

support for artists' careers along with a commitment to education and advocacy.

As Apollo's in-house historian, tour guide and ambassador, Mitchell, 74, holds a wealth of knowledge, deservedly earning the name "Mr. Apollo." When asked to name one of his proudest Apollo moments, Mitchell doesn't hesitate. It was giving a private tour to Michelle Obama, along with her daughters and mother, when the Obamas were in the White House. "I sang 'My Girl' with Michelle Obama up on this stage," he recalls as he sings a few familiar bars of the song. "We were on the stage singing, and I told her about my life. She told me I needed to write a book.” Mitchell says working at the Apollo is more than just a job for him, and he'll do it as long as he's able. "I meet people that most people only dream about meeting," he says. "It means so much to be a part of this institution. I wish everybody could see what I've seen at the Apollo."

When Billy Mitchell takes to the Apollo Theater stage, he's not singing or dancing. But he's as mesmerizing as they come. On a recent tour of the legendary Harlem institution, about 50 people listened attentively as Mitchell demonstrated his gift for storytelling. Whether talking about his days as a youngster running errands for the likes of James Brown and Marvin Gaye or instilling the importance of a good education, Mitchell's engaging presence is enough to get people of all ages to put their phones away for an hour. "People come from all over the world to tour the Apollo, and it's a beautiful thing," Mitchell says. "Most people don't know the history of the Apollo; they look at us as just being Black culture, but we're a part of American culture. We are very proud of that."

Living to 100 Is Still the Exception, Not the Norm By Gary M. Stern

An October 2024 article in the New York Times about longevity for most people in the U.S. in the coming years predicts that humans may have reached their peak of life expectancy. And the few outliers who lived to be 100 and more are by far the exception and not the norm. So, living to be 100 years is still a pipe dream for most people, but what would it take to live for a century? That article was precipitated by a study in the journal Nature Aging written by S. Jay Olshansky, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which said that maximum expectancy in the coming years will reach an average age of 87 in the U.S., 84 for men and 90 for women. In essence, life expectancy has peaked.

Asked in a follow-up interview with Next Avenue why people can't live on average until 100, Olshansky emphasized that "We're making ourselves live longer but can't avoid the immutable biological process of aging." He compares the aging process to driving an automobile up a steep hill. "The hill gets steeper, and the engine stays the same," he said. Olshansky noted that human body parts wear down and that includes knees and hips, eyes and ears and the cardiovascular system. All of those body parts work efficiently for years (until they don't), and medicine has done an effective job of repairing them. Hence, we get stents for the cardiovascular system, statins for cholesterol levels and drugs for diabetes. He advised it's best to concentrate on the "parts that make us frailer and more disabled. The aging brain is one of our most important Achilles' heels, but body parts involved in blood flow and respiration are foundational."

"Most bodies can't last until 100. It's like asking why can't you drive a car for a million miles?" he said.

"Most bodies can't last until 100. It's like asking why can't you drive a car for a million miles?"

Asked why so many people cling to the low probability of making it to that triple-digit age, Olshansky said, "They don't want to die, and they've been promised a century by people selling them something they wanted to hear."

Make a Family Valentine BY A. ROCHAUN MEADOWS-FERNANDEZ

Directions 1. Make a heart for each member of your family out of construction paper. Invite each family member to select the color they’d like for their heart. Then, fold the paper in half and cut a crescent-like shape out of the paper, starting from the top and tapering toward the bottom. Or you can draw a heart on one sheet of paper that you cut out to use as a stencil to make more hearts. Try to make each heart the same size. 2. Gather your decorating supplies and encourage each family member to decorate their heart. You can use markers, crayons, paints, glitter, or something completely different. You choose! 3. Grab your decorated hearts and glue them together at the edges. Apply pressure after each glue application, so your heart petals stick together. Your family valentine flower might look differently based on the number of loved ones or petals in your family. But that’s OK! 4. After you have glued all your heart petals together, lay the family valentine on the table for the finishing touches! It can be fun to make one smaller heart or circle to place in the middle with your family name. 5. Find a nice place to display your family valentine, like on your wall or door. Talk with your child about what they learned about

Pinkalicious reminds us there are many ways to show your loved ones how much you care about them. When her Valentine’s Day gifts for each of her friends are ruined, she thinks of a creative solution: a giant collage for the entire class! Now it’s your family’s turn to join in the fun. Gather your loved ones and invite them to make a family valentine collage together. Materials • Construction paper (Red, pink, and white are traditional. Use what you like.) • Markers • Crayons • Glue or tape • Scissors • Paint and paintbrushes (optional) • Decorations, such as glitter, pompoms, and stickers (optional)

their family members while making the valentine and celebrate what makes your loved ones unique.
