in—took action. Using the World Health Organization’s calendar as a guide, Jon and his cohort of Peace Corps volunteers became involved in multiple projects that ranged from health screening in neighboring isolated communities to aiding in the plight of Roma children. Quickly, work began on breast cancer screenings, alcohol education, smoking cessation, dental care for Roma children, and support for Kampi Po Emer (translation: Camp No Name), a summer experience that integrates Roma children with non-Roma children. After a short time, Jon’s projects expanded to include two issues very close to him: anti- bullying and LGBT acceptance. Unfortunately, Jon’s commitment ended last spring. Initially, he was understandably upset that he would not be able to see his efforts through to their conclusion. Upon reflection, he accepted his place in the process and acknowledged that while he may not be physically present for the culmination,

his contributions will continue to resound. Last summer, Jon began his new position at Rutgers University in the Global Health Program where he is working with nursing students to incorporate global health perspectives into the existing curriculum. One of the great perks of this position is that Jon gets to live near his brother, Patrick ’94, and his family.

A few years ago, I wrote an eighth-grade production titled “A Hero.” While writing the musical I concluded that a hero was someone who did the right thing without the expectation of recognition. In the case of my son Jon, the definition fits perfectly.

CLASS of 1998 BRANDEN HENDERSON Branden and wife Remi welcomed baby girl “Nahla” earlier this year.

PAY IT FORWARD Last year, fourth graders learned about the idea of “pay it forward” in their Friendship Group, led by Ms. Cohen. The Pay it Forward project is about doing something kind for someone without expecting anything in return or having something kind done for you and in turn doing something for someone else. The class brainstormed many different ways they could pay it forward and decided upon a collaborative class project. With the support of their families, the boys collected necessities to be handed out to the homeless. The necessities—including food, water, toiletries, and more—were put into a bag along with a kind note. After the bags were assembled, each boy took several bags home to store until he saw an opportunity to pay it forward. Their enthusiasm for this project was thrilling to watch and their passion was inspiring. They all felt so proud to help people in need and are aware of what an impact they can make through kind and simple gestures. The hope is that the boys will continue to pay it forward in many ways, and encourage those around them to do the same.
