MUSIC WITH ANDREW AND POLLY October 6, 2015
CLASS OF 1986 REUNION January 9, 2016 Organized by Chad Thigpen, a group of guys from the Class of ’86 gathered after the Alumni Day Party to celebrate their 30th reunion over dinner!
Award-winning music-makers, Andrew Barkan, CSB Class of ’94, and his wife Polly Hall, visited CSB’s kindergarten, first, and second grades for a morning of music and silliness. The Alumni Association wanted to introduce CSB families to “Ear Snacks,” Andrew & Polly’s new podcast for kids, featuring kids (but parents love it, too). In a recent “Ear Snacks” review by KidsCanGroove.com they wrote, “I felt like I was listening to a kid version of ‘Portlandia.’ (Andrew and Polly) have the right combination of charm, appealing sense of humor, and versatility.” Learn more about Andrew & Polly at andrewandpolly.com and find their podcast on iTunes.

ALUMNI DAY COCKTAIL PARTY January 9, 2016
Founding Headmaster The Rev. Canon David Forbes, Alumni President Marc Miller ’74, and Headmaster Burns Jones traveled to NYC to host a reunion for East Coast alumni in January 2016. Alumni (and alumni parents) were invited to join us at Park Avenue Tavern for drinks and bites. We had alumni from CA, DC, CT, NJ and NY! If you’re living or attending school on the East Coast and didn’t receive an invite, please be sure the alumni office has your current mailing information. E-mail us at alumni@cathedralschool.net.
We had an excellent turnout from alumni spanning the classes of 1960 to 2015 at January’s Alumni Day Party. The AAC honored music teacher Sean Breen at its evening reception on the 38th floor of the Grand Hyatt hotel in San Francisco. David Hopkins ’98 presented the Alumni Recognition Award to Sean Breen on behalf of our Alumni Association. In his remarks, David joked about how Sean had the ability to re-instill confidence in those boys who weren’t selected for the choir. David also thanked Sean for the many wonderful eighth-grade plays, bell choirs, his use of humor to make lessons come to life, and for making music “fun.” He closed by reading quotes from Sean’s former students and their parents.

CLASS OF 2012 REUNION June 7, 2016
“I have always enjoyed music. Whether it was singing along to Top Billboard Hits of the 1960s in the car with my family, or calmly listening to Aaron Copland’s ‘Appalachian Spring’ drifting through the house every Sunday morning, I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t a part of my life. But I can remember a time when it began to shape my life. When I was younger, what I admired most was the Cathedral School for Boys’ Choir. I used to dream of singing the solo of “Once in Royal David’s City” at Lessons and Carols. Unfortunately, I would never realize this dream in full. I still vividly remember how painful it was upon learning I wasn’t accepted into the choir in Lower School. However, years later, I took an opportunity that would influence my decisions for the next ten years. In eighth grade, Mr. Breen asked my class who wished to audition for the lead role of “Denny” in the musical. I looked around the room and saw a small handful of kids raise their hands. Then I saw Mr. Breen look at me. He smiled and said, “Raise your hand, Henry.” I ended up nabbing the role and performing ‘8-Track Love’ with an amount of flamboyance and enthusiasm that surprised me even more than it surprised my parents. About a decade later, with landing many leading roles in plays and musicals alike, four a cappella groups (one high school, two college, and one professional), a degree in theater arts, and a couple of music/singing awards, I can say with absolute certainty it was Sean Breen’s confidence in me that allowed for a young boy’s curiosity to grow into a deep passion for music and performing arts. He has my true gratitude.” – HENRY HETZ ’07
“Sean is very special to the Soheili Family for many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is his interest in multicultural music experiences. He brought a special Farsi tune to our Persian New Year celebration each year when we would present at Chapel. We were so touched by his effort, interest, and commitment to honoring the traditions of ancient cultures, and educating others along the way.” – SASHA SOHEILI, mom to Kian ’15 and Dara ’ 18
The Brahm Family hosted a reunion for the Class of 2012, their parents, and teachers to celebrate high school graduations and college admissions.
