MOVING UP, IN, AND ON

CSB FACULTY AND STAFF ON THE MOVE

PAUL BERTRAND assumes the responsibilities of Cathedral School’s Director of Curriculum this year. This is a new position at the School, and in this role, Paul will oversee the School’s processes of professional development and evaluation, curriculum review and development, project-based learning, and technology. Paul has been instrumental in many of the curricular initiatives that have developed over the last few years. His knowledge of the School and his relationship with the staff will help ensure that CSB’s academic programs continue to develop and thrive.

KATE JUERGENS spent seven years teaching our kindergarten class and instilling a love of learning in her students. During her tenure, she also designed a social-emotional learning program called the “Peace Corner.” This program helps boys express their feelings through conflict resolution strategies. In addition, Kate also took on important administrative responsibilities such as the management of the Brain Works program and chairpersonship of the Global Committee. Her leadership at Cathedral School for Boys combined with her master’s in curriculum and instruction, primed her for her new role as the School’s Director of Lower School.

In his new position, Director of Community and Inclusion, AARON MULLEN, is responsible for developing and implementing our multicultural program. The main component of this program includes training for staff, students, and parents. Aaron will also run some of the faculty and staff meetings on Thursday afternoons and during in-service days, facilitate discussions with adults in the form of diversity dialogues, and address the student body through assembly and chapel. Aaron works with the school administration to make sure its policies are inclusive of all members of the CSB community. Aaron, alongside the Director of Curriculum, Paul Bertrand, will further develop and oversee the multicultural curriculum taught to every boy and in all subject areas. Aaron will continue to teach Upper School PE and lead lunchtime Perspectives conversations.

JACKIE MUNZ will continue to serve the Upper School but in the new, full-time Upper School Learning Support Specialist position. Most recently, Jackie has worked as our whole school Learning Specialist, where she has overseen the innumerable aspects of student support services. Upper Schoolers already seek out Jackie’s office for homework help and study strategies, as well as updates on the University of Michigan scoreboard. Students, parents, and teachers alike are thrilled to have Jackie’s services dedicated to Upper School.

TARA BOLAND has seen CSB through a variety of lenses, and brings that experience to her role as High School Counselor. While she first came to CSB as a parent (Elliott, ’22), she quickly joined our staff as a maternity leave substitute for seventh- and eighth-grade English. Tara’s approach to high school counseling can be summarized as thoughtful and thorough. With the ultimate goal as finding the best match for each boy academically and personally, Tara guides boys and their families through meaningful reflection as they identify the attributes important to them in a high school. Tara’s attention to detail shines in her communication with parents and schools. As the class of 2016 already knows, Tara is an excellent counselor and we are so lucky to have her here at CSB!

After a few years of serving in a variety of capacities at CSB, including Library Assistant, HARRISON WILKES works as CSB’s Assistant to the Headmaster this year. Harrison’s knowledge of the School and attention to detail will serve him well in this new role. In addition to supporting the Headmaster, Harrison will also take on a variety of general administrative duties such as managing the School’s master calendar, supporting the Board of Trustees, and serving as CSB’s registrar.

COURTNEY GRAHAM’S thoughtful, calm, and consistent teaching has touched all corners of CSB’s Lower School, while also making a significant impact on the Upper School program. Courtney has touched those with whom she has worked and brought out the best in them. Her patience with the process of learning; her keen ability to understand what is behind the choices, successes, and struggles of her students; and her impressive ability to set the right goals to support their development will all serve her well as she moves into the Lower School Learning Support Coordinator position.
