MOVING UP, IN, AND ON

CSB FACULTY AND STAFF ON THE MOVE

Q&A WITH LIBRARIAN HELEN HUBER After 15 years as our school librarian, Helen Huber has retired.

RED&GOLD: Where did you go to college? Helen Huber: I received my undergraduate from Michigan State University, and master’s degree in education from the University of Houston. R&G: How many years did you work at CSB? HH: One year as library volunteer, and 15 years as librarian. R&G: What role(s) did you have? HH: Besides being librarian, I was a reading tutor, study skills teacher, fifth-grade advisor, and international field trip professional nagger/nurturer (chaperone). R&G: What was your first day like? HH: My mouth hurt from smiling all day! I loved connecting boys with books, recommending class reading books for teachers, and read-alouds for parents in what turned out to be a much more busy (and loud) space than I expected. R&G: What do you expect your last day will be like? HH: Sweet, sad, and thrilling. Equally. R&G: What do you like best about working at CSB? HH: Sharing the joy of reading with the people. R&G: What will you miss the most about CSB? HH: Besides buying new books almost every single day (including weekends and holidays), I’ll miss being in the stacks and connecting the perfect book with its reader.

R&G: Who made the biggest impact on you? HH: Debbie Abilock, a librarian I worked with prior to CSB at The Nueva School, who encouraged, mentored, and guided me. R&G: Who do you consider your CSB best friend? HH: I’m going to lose friends if I answer this one. R&G: What was your favorite lunch menu item? HH: Grated carrot salad with mandarin and citrus dressing. My mouth waters just thinking about it. R&G: What was your favorite CSB activity or event? HH: Each night during Outdoor Education, fifth graders drag their sleeping bags and stuffies into my cabin, and I read them the mesmerizing tale of “The Sword in the Stone,” written and illustrated by Hudson Talbott. R&G: What is next? HH: A life in the San Juan Islands with my beloved, our four cats, and maybe a few chickens. Plus joining an online book club, teaching some baking classes, traveling, kayaking, and reading adult books without guilt. I hope. R&G: May we call you with any problems that might arise due to your departure? HH: Reception on the islands is spotty…
