Peter R. Getz Peter wrote in to share his memories of David Forbes: “All these years later, I have very clear memories of Canon Forbes. I wish I had been physically up to traveling to join in honoring him. The last time I saw David was between 1979 & 1981 while I was attending the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. NAES was holding a meeting there. I got to stand between him and the Rev. Chris Jones. One was the headmaster I went to school under and the other the headmaster who hired me to teach 4th grade. I worked with Chris again in the late 80s when he was director of admissions at Texas Military Institute (my other alma mater)and I taught in the English department before becoming Chaplain. Up until a year ago when I had to downsize to fit into retirement setting, I still had my Hymnal 1940 and American Psalter that Richard Purvis used in our music classes, along with the two books David used for our religion classes. I also remember him teaching us church architecture where we drew a floor plan of the cathedral. One of the drawbacks to being a preacher’s kid is the fact that we moved great distances and ended up not living near the places that were important to my formation. I attended a conference in San Francisco around 2000 (give or take a year) solely so I could visit the school. You’ve come a long way from what we had. I had only seen the completed cathedral in the movie Bullitt with Steve McQueen and a print of an etching that a parishioner brought to me after visiting the west coast. The first building I attended class in had to come down for the cathedral to be completed.” CLASS of 1973 Frederick R.
