N o foreign missionaries are allowed to go to the Andaman Islands, in the Bay of Bengal, off the east coast of India. How then are these people to hear the gospel? The Lord called George David, an Anglo- Indian from Madras, India, to be their missionary. It is no easier for an Indian to be a missionary, even to an island under the same government, than it is for an American to go to a foreign country. There are always problems. But before the Lord called George, he proved that he was worthy of the call. George grew up in South India. Becoming a con secrated Christian, he decided to attend Calcutta Bi ble College. Before he left his home town, a friend gave him a package and asked, “ Will you deliver this to some friends living in Calcutta? I am anxious to win them to the Lord but can’t seem to reach them. If I say ‘church,’ they shy away.” “ I’ll gladly deliver it,” George promised and lugged the package to Calcutta. After he was settled in school, he located the friends and was surprised to learn that the man was the vice counsel for Burma. He prayed, then went to the home and gave the package to the mistress of the house. From her fea tures he realized that she was Karen (one of the tribespeople from Burma), for he had been assigned by the school to witness among the Karen people in Calcutta. He said, "I know several Karens who are Christians. Are you a Christian?" “ Yes," she replied. “ What church do you attend?” “ We're so busy we don’t have time to go to church.” 24
“ Then why don’t you have a meeting in your home?” She hesitated, then offered the excuse, “ I would have to ask my husband.” “ Where is your husband?" “ He’s in his office.” “ Let’s go and ask him now.” She was so taken aback that she led George into her husband’s office. After the introductions, George said, " I ’ve spoken to your wife and she said if you’d consent, she would let my Karen friends have a church meeting in your home.” “ That’s up to my wife,” the man replied. “ Then we can meet on Wednesday,” George de cided. From that time on, he taught a Bible class in their home each Wednesday. Both the vice counsel and his wife attended the meetings and on New Year’s at a watchnight service, the couple went to Carey Baptist Church and dedicated themselves to the Lord. George had intended to return to Madras. In stead, one day as he was studying the map, he felt that the Lord wanted him to go to the Andaman Islands. When he went home for the holidays, he became more burdened for the Andamans and even told his church, “ Do not expect me back.” He returned to college and told the head of the faculty, Dr. J. W. Cook, of his call. “ Fine! I hope to see you go but you know that if I, or the school or Carey Church support you, the government will say that foreign money is sending THE KING'S BUSINESS
