CAN YOU ADD A FUNNEL/SWIRL IN THE GREEN LIQUID. BOYS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE STARING AT GREEN SODA.

NICARAGUA REFLECTIONS

VOLCÁN MASAYA Before dinner we drove out to Volcán Masaya. They only let in a certain number of cars at a time and only allow you to visit the volcano for 10 minutes, so we had about an hour’s wait in the bus. It was worth it though, and the sun had set by the time we reached the top. Despite the long wait, boys were ecstatic to see lava.

“ I learned that even if you don’t speak the same language, or are from a different country, or are different in any way, you can still get to know people and have relationships with them.” EVAN A. ’17 “I learned that I can really get used to living anywhere. I was not used to living or sleeping in a house like that, but I ended up loving it and it felt like home. Also, I learned that I can be away from tech without a problem. We had a PS3 in our house with a ton of games, but my roommate and I only ended up using it once. We came to the conclusion that that wasn’t what we had come to Nicaragua for.” ALE M. ’18 “I learned that taking risks is good for me. It makes you step out of your comfort zone and you can learn a lot.” MATTHEW A. ’18 “I had a lot of fun on this trip, and I learned a lot about myself too! I learned that I really like communicating in Spanish. I also learned that I should get to know people more before I judge them, because I made a lot of friends that I didn’t think I would be friends with before. I think that this trip was a really fun experience, and CSB should keep this tradition going!” BAKER M. ’18 “The trip taught me about placing others before yourself and the benefit of helping someone else out. I think this experience could help me with empathy/compassion.” LOCHLAIN S. ’18 “I learned how to expand my friendships with different people, not caring about what their social status is or anything else. I also learned that being away from the screens (iPhone, etc.) was awesome! I got to talk more and just be myself.” TIMMY U. ’18 “I think that I learned how honestly lucky I am.” HENRI Z. ’18

Brain Works campers watch a motor-simulated tornado

WHAT IF? BY JENNIE ROZSA, Performing Arts Teacher and Brain Works Director

LIGHTS OUT We ate back at the Laguna and then had a bit of quiet time. The other chaperones are supervising lights out as I write this—I expect most boys will be asleep before I finish. It’s been a great trip, full of activity, and you can expect tired guys who are also eager to share the stories of their adventures when they get home to you tomorrow night. I’ll send an email with flight reminders tomorrow. For more posts and video from Cathedral’s Nicaragua trip please visit: http://cathedralmeetsnicaragua.blogspot.com/?view=classic

Campers attending Brain Works’ co-ed “Science is Everywhere” class held at Cathedral experienced a tornado this summer.

The class, taught by former teacher, Chloe Banks, created a tornado using 2-liter soda bottles with a motor to simulate the tornado’s centripetal motion. After watching the motor mimic the tornados circular motion and making observations about the movement, one boy exclaimed, “What if we drop LEGO people inside the tornado?” Mrs. Banks indulged the kids by adding the two LEGO minifigures to the tornado mixture. As the LEGO people swirled, the boys voiced their hypotheses as to why each LEGO person swirled differently. Mrs. Banks gently guided their answers to the correct scientific conclusion. “What if” questions develop scientific thinking. This type of thinking is encouraged at Brain Works activities—from robotics

to cooking to gardening to art, and even to recess time. At Brain Works, “what if” questions get answered. ABOUT BRAIN WORKS: Brain Works at Cathedral is a co-educational summer program focused on enriching, engaging, and inspiring students via a variety of academically-minded classes and work- shops. Designed for girls and boys entering first through eighth grade, Brain Works takes place each summer at Cathedral School.
