EVENTS ALUMNI

IN MEMORIAM We are deeply saddened by the loss of the following members of the Cathedral Community.

2016–2017

Charles shared his love of the arts and education with his family and friends. In addition to being a member of the Bohemian Club, he served on the Boards of the Joffrey Ballet, Grace Cathedral, and Cathedral School for Boys. During his time on the School’s Board, Charles was involved with the campaign that renovated Gresham Hall and created a new theater and stage for performing arts. A celebration of Charles’ life was held at Grace Cathedral on March 20, and his family, including his wife Julie, daughter Dorie, and son Stephen (a Cathedral School graduate from the Class of 2015), directed memorial donations to the School in lieu of flowers. Charles’s parents, Cynthia and Merrill Magowan, wished to create a lasting tribute to their son and contacted the School to create an endowed fund that would support arts education at Cathedral School. Their generosity, along with the thoughtful individual gifts made to the School in Charles’s memory, has established The Charles Merrill Magowan Arts Education Fund. This endowment seeks to increase student exposure to the visual, performing, and creative arts by providing funding for the School

ALUMNI DAY PARTY January 7, 2017

We had an excellent turnout from alumni spanning the classes of 1960 to 2016 at January’s Alumni Day Party. The AAC honored history teacher Peter Mundy at the evening reception on the 38th floor of the Grand Hyatt in SF. A group of Alumni including Matt Thier ’00, Will Barkan ’98, Nate Pola ’15, and Gavin Pola ’16 presented Mr. Mundy with the Alumni Recognition Award on behalf of the Alumni Association.

Headmaster Burns Jones, Henry Steere ‘15, and his father, Matt Steere share a few laughs at the Alumni Day party.

CHARLES MERRILL MAGOWAN April 16, 1963 - March 3, 2017 Charles Magowan joined Cathedral School’s Class of 1977 in third grade and joined Grace Cathedral’s Choir of Men & Boys. Such was his talent and love for music that he remained a choirboy even after transferring to another school to finish his grammar school education. Throughout his life, Charles was highly creative and had a vast knowledge of many subjects. This was evident in his range of professional and personal ventures that included financial advising, salmon farming in Norway, software development, and a funhouse mirror maze at Fisherman’s Wharf. (Magowan’s Infinite Mirror Maze is still operating at Pier 39.)

to bring artists and performances to campus as well as taking boys off-campus to experience live performances and cultural exhibitions. We thank the Magowan Family for honoring Charles’s life with this thoughtful gift that will benefit genera- tions of students by promoting a lifelong engagement with and appreciation of the arts. The Red and Gold battled it out in Gresham (Red won 39 to 15) and then they took on the Faculty Hawks. In a stunning upset, the Faculty were victorious winning 35 to 23! We had a full house of alumni, alumni parents, and alumni children to cheer them on to victory.

On June 10, the Class of ’67 celebrated its 50th reunion at the St Francis Yacht Club. It was a perfect day to revel in boyhood memories. The reunion was visited by founding Cathedral Headmaster The Rev. Canon David Forbes and current Headmaster Burns Jones. Nine alumni were present—almost half the class—and Charles McConney joined in by phone. This reunion was not as remarkable as it might appear since most of the class has been in contact since their boyhood days at Cathedral.
