NOVEMBER 20, 2018 CATHEDRAL’S DAY OF SERVICE A part of Cathedral School’s Mission has always been “to develop social responsibility through exemplary programs of outreach and service” and “to create a community bonded by open-heartedness, hope, compassion, and concern.” We approach service learning at
younger boys at drop-off, Lower School boys managing our lost & found, boys helping their classmates and accompa- nying them to the front office when they are sick or hurt, as well as student groups and classes managing compost bins and lunchroom clean-up. These types of activities emphasize the importance of serving one another and the School community. They provide a foundation for boys as we engage them in service activities with communities beyond our own. On Monday, November 20, 2017, Cathedral introduced its first Day of Service for all students. On this day,
Cathedral boys took part in a variety of service-related activities, These service- related activities focused on: Food Insecurity Environmental Justice Homelessness
Cathedral School by addressing it on several levels: service to oneself and healthy human development; service to family, friends, and those we know; and service to those outside of our imme- diate communities and for the greater good. Exploring each of these levels reveals important lessons. As we move from “I” to “you” to “us,” we can begin to understand our interconnectedness and appreciate how we are part of a larger community.
