IN MEMORIAM We are deeply saddened by the loss of the following members of the Cathedral Community.
DONALD M. GREGORY, JR. March 22, 1928 – March 2, 2018
We are sad to announce the passing of Donald M. Gregory, Jr., one of Cathedral’s founding Trustees, parent of two alumni (Alan ’70 and Robert ’76), and grandparent of two more (Hector ’10 and Tut ’12). A third generation San Franciscan, Donald attended Hamlin (as one of the few boys ever to go there), and graduated from Town before going to Thacher, Yale, and later Wharton Business School. He returned to San Francisco after a stint in the Army and in Washington D.C. to begin his career and raise a family. As one of the School’s earliest Trustees, Donald was instrumental in Cathedral’s growth after the completion of the main school building in 1967. During his time as Board chair
from 1967-69, while both of his sons were enrolled as students, the School grew to 176 boys in grades one through eight (with waitlists for each grade). Throughout his life, Donald continued to be an enthusiastic supporter of the School and attended annual school events well into his 80s, especially enjoying Grandparents & Special Friends Day, Lessons & Carols, and the first Saturday performance of the Grace Cathedral Christmas Concert series. Outside of his involvement with Cathedral, Donald was an avid outdoorsman, world traveler, and dedicated family man. We remain ever grateful for his work in establishing the caring and joyful culture and community that continues to this day.
