ANNUAL REPORT CATHEDRAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS 2017–2018
DEAR Cathedral School Community,
I remember the first time I set foot in Cathedral School for Boys. After a beautiful Hymn Sing service, we toured the classrooms, and I was blown away by the enthusiasm, skill, and energy of the teachers, and by the apparent connection they had with their students. Our family has now been at Cathedral for 13 years, and while many of the people we met on that first visit have moved
Operations, have given their hearts to Cathedral in their years working here. I want to thank these two for their many years of service and for being such an essential part of the fabric of the School. As my time on the Board comes to a close, I am confident that the School is operating from a position of great strength. Our admissions numbers—both incoming and outgoing – remain robust, and once again this year the Cathedral School Fund raised a record-breaking amount, closing with a total of $1.15M in gifts and pledges received. Our Headmaster, Burns Jones, has continued to demonstrate his strength as a leader and his commitment to the School’s Mission. Since arriving at the School, he has been determined to dig into what it means to provide an excellent education for boys. The resulting programmatic changes have already resulted in improved reading and math performance in the Lower School. But equally important, he is a consistent presence in our community, cheering for boys at the sidelines of games, hosting events at his home, and even joining CSB parents in weekend soccer games. I am pleased to hand over the reins to our next Board Chair, Greg Gretsch. Greg just completed his fourth year on the Board, and he has proven himself not only a dedicated trustee but an enthusiastic supporter of the School. Greg has co-chaired the Development and Major Gifts committees, served on the transition and strategic planning committees, and served as Vice Chair of the Board. Perhaps even more significantly, he has four sons currently enrolled at the School. Greg likes to say he is “all in” at CSB, and I know he will be a strong leader going forward. I want to close by thanking each of you. I have been inspired and moved by so many people at CSB—teachers, administrators, alumni, parents, boys, and members of the Grace Cathedral community. The faces sometimes change, but the underlying commitment and heart remain the same. It has been an incredible honor and a pleasure to work with all of you in support of this exceptional school.
on, others who are equally engaged and connected to the School’s values have arrived. Parents, administrators, faculty, and trustees both new and old—make CSB the extraordinary community that it is. This year, our Board continued its work on our recently adopted strategic plan by forming teams to investigate pathways towards its implementation. The work of transforming classrooms to create the best possible learning environment for our boys is already underway, generously supported by our families with a fund-a-need campaign at our annual gala. (In addition, we underwent a master planning process to re-envision our campus to better support learning, including space that will allow our co-teaching model in the Lower School to thrive.) At our 60th anniversary celebration, we announced the Canon David R. Forbes Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence. The funds provided by this initiative will help to ensure that CSB can attract, retain, and support teachers who have a gift and passion for educating boys. Much of the Board’s work happens at the committee level, and this year the Board took the important step to strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion by adding a new permanent committee under our bylaws. The Cultural Competency Committee, which will work with the faculty and administration to implement best practices in cultural competence at the School, will help us live out our school’s long-standing commitment to provide an excellent education for all students. As people are at the heart of CSB, I was thrilled this spring when our Board voted to make Thayer Hopkins Jr. a lifetime trustee. Thayer, an alumnus parent whose family’s history with the school goes back to its founding, has for several years chaired the Buildings & Grounds committee. CSB is incredibly lucky to continue to benefit from his wisdom, hard work, institutional knowledge, and love of the School. This year we said goodbye to others who have also enriched the School with their dedicated presence. Both Cathy Madison, as Director of Admission, and Pierre Jospé, as Director of Finance and
